Probably the Beast Player Erin.

I'm quite shocked by how obscure this show is - especially considering that it's both family friendly and really well done. I don't think i've ever seen anyone say anything bad about it (though, i'm sure someone would drum up reasons to shoot it down).

There are some others I would mention, but I tend to see a lot of pictures and references to them - so I feel like they have a kind of "second-hand" popularity even if hardly anyone actually knows what they are.

I've been watching anime for 20+ years and have ONLY heard about Monster through word of mouth on forums and youtube. You can't find the complete volume anywhere legal and it isn't being shown on any streaming sights. Many new or casual fans are unlikely to come to forums. One of the reasons I post in CR is because I like to get recommendations from fellow fans. Just find it weird that it was never really marketed, the dubbing is solid as well

AFAIK, Viz's rights to Monster have expired, which is why you no longer see if available for legal streaming.

Back when SyFy was still the Sci-Fi channel and had AniMonday, it was shown there. That would have given a lot of casuals at least exposure to the series, but that is now years in the past.

The series is so close to perfection, It's scary

Here I posted a complete overview/review of it: http://www.anime-forums.com/showthread.php?140783-Kemono-no-Souja-Erin

The biggest problem in the anime, is the existence of those two village idiots(luckily they don't get a whole lot of screen time).

It's one of the biggest tragedies in the entire history of anime, for such a great anime to end up being so unknown.

Agreed.

Wow - I honestly didn't realize that you posted that earlier in this thread - but now I feel even more justified in my response. It's quite odd that the show isn't popularized more.

And I completely agree regarding the idiots (Nuk and Mok, I think they were?). But the show is so good that I honestly didn't even care by the end. Plus they're not that bad and kind of understandable considering the nature of the show.

But yea - definitely a shame that it's so obscure.

Yea, not only was it adapted from a famous novel, but one of the best, and most well known studios in the industry made the anime as well. The only explaination I could come up with, is the anime fandom in Japan is a complete joke.

Do people in Japan have computers just for show or something lol, it boggles the mind how such a anime can end up going unnoticed, aside from it having no in your face advertisment campaign for it, it literally had everything going for it(great, well known source, made by a well reknown studio, which went all out with it. This anime is pure proof how great IG truly is, it was always clear they were good/had mad potential, but there was no way to know how good they really were, because they only do super short series. The first time they attempt to make a medium sized series, and they hit it out of the park making a high end great).

You see, unlike Japan, we don't have the option of watching a major studio's webpage to locate potential high quality shows, nor do we have easy access to what DvDs are being released in Japan, what is Japanese's excuse lol.

I've been reading the manga of that. It's great. Haven't checked out the anime yet, though.

Irresponsible Captain Tyler

Think Star Trek, but primarily as a comedy. It's about a guy who joins the space fleet and on his first mission (delivering a pension check to a retired fleet admiral) he accidentally foils some terrorists' plans, saving the admiral and his two grand daughters. He gets a huge promotion and becomes captain of his own ship. His superiors, crew mates, and even an alien empire try to screw him over, but everything always backfires in his favor and hilarity ensues. It gets kind of serious later on though, and the OVAs are tear jerkers.

King of Bandit Jing

Easiest way I can explain this is that it is a cross between Kino's Journey and James Bond. Jing (Also known as the King of Bandits) travels to different really odd locations each with their own mini-story going on. He himself is pretty stoic but he has a perverted crow named Keel. Anyway, he helps people out and usually gets a girl to fall in love with him before he moves on to the next location. It's very episodic and not meant to be watched for an overarching plot. Each story is interesting on it's own. The manga version is episodic as well, but spans I think 15 years or so with constant time skips.

I really, really, really, recommend watching Irresponsible Captain Tyler, it's hilarious. I love King of Bandits Jing , but at the same time I do feel like it has a lot of issues and that it's more of a guilty pleasure than anything to me. Basically if you want to see a cool stoic MC do some cool stoic MC stuff in a fantasy land, Jing is for you. I'd dare even say it's kind of like SAO season 1, except that Jing is a lot cooler than Kirito, because he's written to be a stoic yet smart-ass thief rather than an extremely talkative moral-spouting hero.

Where can Monster be legally streamed, anyway? I can't find it anywhere and I've got a good friend who loved it but never finished it, years ago.

Lol no

Isn't Attack on Titan pretty much mainstream now, It's so sickingly overhyped, and talked about? It's hard to imagine someone not knowing of that anime.

But you are just guessing! Where is your proof? Is Love Live mainstream? Is Gintama? Where do you get your facts from?

When something is in 4 out of 5 people lists, news flash, It's mainstream.

I have lost count of how many people have seen, and mentioned that damn anime sigh, if that's not mainstream, nothing but the big 3 is mainstream.

I will have to double check then. Do you have a full list of all the mainstream anime?

No, but once a anime reaches a certain popularity lv, you really can't pass it off as a unknown. It's way above the cult lv of popularity, so what is it, if not mainstream?
