Hagukei: Legend of the Moby Dick.

Top-tier pre-digital animation sci-fi with hints of space opera, old school writing and fantastic characters. I randomly watched it because the basic tagline was "Moby Dick in space" but I was a lot more satisfied than I usually am after finishing a series. It's not perfect, the first half drags a bit and the ending felt rushed, but I still liked it a lot.

But it felt like they had a planned second season yanked away from them, which is too bad.

Lets just say, I watched it recently, but couldn't find it anywhere legally!

Also, can I ask this hear?Hasanyone watched the entire Champion Joe?Love that show, but don't think many on crunchyroll watched it.

Yea, if you can't watch it legally, you have no other choice(serves anime companies right), and only a fool buys a anime without seeing it first, so yea no other way around such.

Sorry nope, never even heard of that anime before.

Don't think they're out trying to fine people for downloading unlicensed shows.Looks like Champion Joe should go on the list .

Your welcome.

Are we going by the MAL rankings then? Which number is the cutoff for "mainstream"? 100?

Dem feels when you realize mainstream is subjective...

lmao I remember hearing about this title a while back, and completely forgot all about it lol, until you mentioned it was basically Moby Dick in space lmao.

I so need to get around to watching that, if nothing else, but to lmao at such a ridiculous concept.

Unfortunately, nowhere anymore. Viz's license for it apparently expired.

A lot of my obscure favorites are mecha honestly. :u

Lords of Lords Ryu Knight, pretty much one of my favorite anime from when I was in middle school. It seems that literally no one has heard of it except people who are really into mecha in the first place.

Fang of the Sun Dougram, it's pretty much overshadowed by it's younger sibling Armored Trooper Votoms most of the time honestly. But it definitely seems to be a found memory among those who watched it. I personally loved it because it was pretty much Vietnam in space.

Betterman, I learned about this show from hardcore mecha fans really, and the short time the dub aired on TechTV/G4TV

Soukyuu no Fafner, a lot of people seemed to have dismissed it as another Evangelion rip-off and didn't give it the time of day

Dual! Parallel Adventure, I discovered this one through hardcore mecha fans like Betterman pretty much.

I like all of the Nura Clan Yokai characters. MC's human friends are kinda annoying, though. I'm only four volumes in, though, out of 20-some out so far. The artist was an assistant for the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure mange, which is neat.

Emma: A Victorian Romance doesn't seem to get a lot of love. It's one of my personal favorites and you can watch it on Youtube and Hulu, I think... both seasons are available. It is a story about a maid in Victorian era England at the cusp of the industrial revolution who meets and falls in love with a member of the gentry/rich folk and who in turn, falls in love with her. Of course the problems of social status come into play and for two seasons we follow the story of these two as they try to sort out their lives and their love for each other. It is based on the manga by Kaoru Mori who is currently writing "A Brides Story." Emma has good animation, great background art, good music,

Emma on the left and William Jones on the right. The two main characters of the story...

Emma and some of the maids from the second season.

Hmmmmm.... any others I can think of...Ah!

The Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou OVA (there are 2, I believe). It captures the essence of the manga very well though scenes where there is no talking, just music, scenic moments, and others without music, sometimes you're watching characters do their daily routines, and etc. To me, it's the perfect slice of life anime series. I just wish they did the entire series instead of jumping partway through. For those interested, you can find them through searches on Youtube.

The anime scene from the OVA:

The original from the manga:

Soul Link (Scifi Slice-of-life Mystery)

Angel Cop (Scifi Police Procedural)

My My Mai (Ecchi)

Blue Drop (Yuri Scifi)

were all fun to watch.

There are 3 titles I'm not sure are mainstream or not since they've never been released in the U.S. and many other countries as well.

Nagasarete Airantou (Offbeat Harem)

Hyouka (Slice of Life Mystery)

Higurashi: When They Cry (Horror)

All were fun to watch for thier own specific reasons .

I agree on the whole Mc's characters being annoying I only like Snow woman even if at times her clingy ness gets on my nerves her power makes up for it and you've read quite a lot I'm still very behind and I didn't know the assistant of nura was all part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure project that's interesting to know ..

Do tend to watch a lot of historical Anime ?
