I also studied Architecture and generally I'd say try and keep it as minimalistic as possible so that you don't detract from the design idea, generally even a silhouette is enough. But if you do wish to I'd say to just build up the shadows/texture of the tree using small circles. This can be done pretty quickly and can be randomised. Also I like the colour pencil drawing you did, far less stylised. Hope this helped!

I'm not an artist but I've learned a few tips for drawing with colored pencils from books:

1) use blue and/or purple (and maybe brown) for the shadows instead of black to make it look more dynamic, I guess?
2) you can overlay colors by applying a light layer of each color and use circular motions so the colors can optically mix
3) you can create a smooth blend with a bright, polished look by applying white over another color but this only works with high quality pencils like Prismacolor

I know it isn't great but here's an example of when I used tips 1 & 2. I just used cheap crayola pencils.

This is my first attempt using the color pencils I have in the house at the moment. Not enough variety to get the perfect color match yet(a cheap set of 20), but its a start.
