No that I'm new to anime but I was wondering what anime different people would have other start on and a reason why.

I would personally say Mushi-shi because it's not as crazy as others.

If they knew about anime was a bit more mature then Full Metal Alchemist (the first one).

Toradora. Funny, slice of life, not OTT. Attack on Titan and Angel Beats, because its a thoughtful classic and the music is good.

When I recommend anime to people, I generally think of things in terms of good shows that can serve as introductions to their respective genres. With that in mind, here are a few shows that are reasonably accessible, and where someone might go from there:

Sword Art Online
Genre: Action, with a bit of Romance thrown in and a head-fake at a Harem.
Plot Summary: Boy gets trapped in MMORPG, finds friends, saves girls, kills bad guys.
What to watch next: A Certain Scientific Index; Strike the Blood; Familiar of Zero,

Toradora
Genre: High School Romantic Comedy, with hints of a Harem.
Plot Summary: OCD boy with scary face and beautiful-but-violent girl discover that they are neighbors with crushes on each others' best (only?) friends.
What to watch next: Golden Time, Haganai, Clannad

Bunny Drop (AKA Usagi Drop)
Genre: Slice of Life (that is, interesting people going about their daily lives)
Plot Summary: 30-something, single man adopts an illegitimate 5-year old girl (who is also a relative) when no one else will take her in
What to watch next: Barakamon, Aria the Animation, Silver Spoon

Eureka Seven
Genre: Mecha (AKA Giant Robots); Romance
Plot Summary: Lonely son of a controversial (presumed dead) hero has a beautiful girl (and her giant robot) drop on his house.
What to watch next: Gundam Lagann; Gargantia of the Verdant Planet; Attack on Titan; Angel Beats

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Genre: Action/Adventure in a unique Fantasy/Science Fiction universe
Plot Summary: Brothers travel the kingdom, and uncover its dark secrets, in order to undo the mistake that cost them their bodies.
What to watch next: Fullmetal Alchemist; Trigun; Ghost in the Shell

Bakemonogatari
Genre: Ghost Stories, Psychological Drama, Romance, Horror, Harem
Plot Summary: Boy who was once bitten by a vampire helps several girls with their supernatural problems.
What to watch next: Elfen Lied (if you want more gore); Spice and Wolf (if you want more conversational romance); Parasyte the Maxim (if you want more interesting and fun horror stories); Dusk Maiden of Amnesia

It depends on the tastes of the person i'm speaking to when it comes to live-action movies.

For sci-fi fans I instantly suggest Stiens;Gate and In Search of the Lost Future.
For Horror fans I suggest Attack on Titan, Black Butler and Parasyte.
For drama fans I suggest Terror in Resonance and Eden of the East.
For romance fans I suggest Say I Love You, The Princess and the Pilot and The Pilot's Love Song..
For fans of family movies I suggest Non Non Biyori, Idolmaster and Locodol.
For comedy fans I suggest Mitsu Domoe, MM! and Mayo Chiki..
For fans of mystery/suspense I suggest Another, Psychopass and Speedgrapher.
For fans of romantic comedy I suggest My Teen Romantic Comedy Snafu, Nisekoi, Haganai or Servant x Service.
For fans of superhero films I suggest Tiger and Bunny and Tokyo ESP.

Maybe for drama and/or mystery you can add Pyscho Pass.
