I'd be a stealthy ninja.

An assassin blade or a dagger would be dandy.

All black. (bahaha)

Light. Badass-looking. Can't ever be a ninja without badass clothing.

Class:
I would most likely focus on endurance and agility first, then get to the strength.

Weapon of choice:
Probably a long thin sword (thicker than a rapier but not as thick as a long sword) and leave the other hand free to be able to grapple and switch weapons easier. (I'd have a short sword as a backup)

Colour of character:
Light grey, short hair with red eyes.
Mostly white armour with grey shoulder pads.

Armour type:
Light but durable armour with a light grey cape.

Depends on a couple things.

1st choice:

Class: Rogue, a lightly armored DEX based build. Ninjas aren't playable because that would imply some sort of magic, but I do enjoy playing stealthy and high speed characters.

Weapon: Dual-wielding daggers. Yes I know, Kirito has unique speshul dual-wielding privileges, but it doesn't make sense to use a single dagger.

Color Scheme: Dark blue with some grey, the best colors for stealth. I'd go with unnatural eye and hair colors (like yellow eyes and blue hair) just to creep people out.

Attire: A hooded duster coat over light leather armor. Fingerless gloves to keep tactile sensitivity while protecting the rest of the hand.

But since dual-wielding is the exclusive privilege of Kirito, even though it's not an uncommon fantasy style and actually required for certain builds (martial artists using fist weapons, rogues using daggers, etc.) I'd probably go with...

Class: Knight, high STR and CON but with low movement speed.

Weapon: Sword and board. It isn't flashy or original at all, but it's the most practical option in terms of fighting (it was standard issue during the Middle Ages for a reason). I'd keep a 2-handed weapon on hand in case the situation calls for it, or the enemy is slow enough that I can dodge attacks.

Color Scheme: Dark red and black. While I would probably act like a stereotypical "paladin" character that doesn't mean I want to look like one, and being outwardly intimidating can be helpful. I'd keep my usual blue eyes and brown hair in this case; it wouldn't matter much wearing a helmet. (By SAO "death game" rules this is pretty much enforced.)

Armor Type: Heavy metal armor. Slowed movement aside, heavy armor is usually the best choice for combat since it can absorb and deflect most forms of conventional assault. Even in game terms it's much more forgiving than light armor; while light armor provides greater freedom of movement, it also promotes fragility. Heavy armor makes dodging difficult but enables its wearer to take far more punishment, so the wearer will probably last longer. Boss monsters might be able to overcome such defenses due to their sheer strength and size advantages, but heavier armor should make its wearer all but immune to damage in the inevitable PvP that arises from a killing game.

Ill just go with my typical Mmorpg Class

Archer
Long Bow or a magical bow (normally the higher ranked bow types in an Mmo)
Normally I go with a Female character who wears full black or white armor. Short blonde hair or short red hair
Light and medium armor mixed, tend to go with what ever allows my skills to refresh the quickest. (In FFXIV I have Allagan aramor)

If I felt like experimenting, I wouldn't mind going with a Paladin class with a focus on healing and DPS so I dont have to worry about working in teams.

SAO would be a pain in the ass as an archer, because I would almost always have to work in a group given the fact monsters have the potential to close in quickly. I would prefer to be able to tank some serious damage while being able to keep my HP above 50% while still being able to whittle my opponent down.

Question, as far as i'm aware, there were no ranged classes in SAO so how would you be a ranged support character is there were no ranged weapons?

Anyway, I would probably go for a tank. Heavy armour, big shield, probably a one handed bastard sword. I'd be built for endurance, but I would also have a fairly heavy attack. On the side I would be a Blacksmith, or more precisely an Armoursmith. I would specialise in making top notch armour for only the most discerning of players.

Ok… I'm basing my answer off of an assumption that SAO, despite the title, would in fact allow players to use ranged weapons (longbow/crossbow, throwing daggers, etc…) because, honestly, leaving out mage-craft is one thing, but who would EVER make a fantasy genre game without bows/arrows? And also, just because we didn't see any ranged fighters in SAO, doesn't mean they weren't there. There was a LOT that went on in SAO that we didn't actually see (blasted time skips). Therefor, my character would be thus:

Class: Ranged/Assassin (or something like that). SAO seemed to have an abundance of various skills that would level up the more they were used, so I'm assuming they'd have a skill set for crafting potions/poisons, which i'd use to craft my own poisons to supplement my weapons and increase their effectiveness. I'd also work on a sneaking/camouflage skill so that I could get the drop on enemies as well, basically doing everything I can to do the most damage possible before they even know I'm there. I'd prefer not to get in an up-close and personal battle, but I'd keep a dagger on me just in case that ever happens.

Weapon: Bow, dagger.

Color: Dark hair, mottled gray and brown cloak and armor.

Armor type: Light armor. Easier to maneuver and probably makes less noise, so it'll be easier to sneak about.

In the case of ranged weapons, all there really was were some small throwing weapons that aren't very powerful. The whole idea of the game was based around the sword skill system, which is why there wasn't any ranged combat options, it's meant to be all melee, all the time in combat for the players. In some ways it's more like a fighting game like Soul Calibur, which has very little in the way of ranged attacks, and a forced limit on how far apart you can fight each other anyway.

Play style: Main Tank
Shield and sword for defense.
Black armor shrouded in a cloak and cowl. Mirror given at launch reveals me to be blonde.
Heavy Armor.

Bit of character description...

Tank mercenary looking for quick cash running rare materiel spawns in between leveling and boss room clears.
Stats are High strength and constitution with moderate speed.
Unique skill is Hydras Fortitude: enables super fast health regeneration while not being attacked (ie switched out of tank role). Hydras Fortitude is gained from leveling both the battle recovery, and first aid skills as well as raising my black dragon (similar appearance to Pina, tamed by Silica).

Edit...
Was thinking about the animal lover thread and had to add Beast Taming.

Kirito has the Dual Wielding skill. However two weapon fighting is not prohibited. At the end of Episode 4 one of the red players is seen wielding 2 axes.

Yeah, I agree. I think supplemental ranged options are good but the focus should be on melee combat, with some medium range at the very most. Melee combat should be the most practical and effective way in this game to fight and deal damage.

The longest reach would be the polearms, which are rarely seen. Not as effective in close quarters but would allow you a modicum of risk prevention.

-Class (Tank or Melee/Support. Depends on the type of weapon or playstyle)
-Weapon of Choice
-Color of character (hair and armor)
-Armor type

-DPS, I'd probably go hybrid Agi and Str and secondary Dex
-Sword (Dual-wield if possible) or Katana
-Black, plain simple.
-Light armor, maybe like a some a light chest piece that's covered up by a robe or cloak.

If it's actually like SAO, where it's VR, I wouldn't like the idea of being all armored up since it restricts movement. If possible, I'd probably switch weapons between dual-wield for my DPS and Katana for brute strength and speed together.
