I just finished SAO a few days ago. I really liked it until about halfway through when it felt like it took a turn for the worse and ended up just being plain weird near the end.

I did finish the show though and went on to try watching the movie that follows. I got halfway through that and stopped. Felt like I was wasting my time.... I'm wondering if watching SAO 2 will be any better or if it continues on like this. I really just like watching anime for story and fight scenes.

I've moved this over to Advice, Info, Recommendations.

I chose not to watch SAO 2 largely for the reasons you state about your experience with the first season and "movie" but it might be significant that while you "really liked" the first half of season 1, I merely "liked" the first few episodes and found everything afterward a bit boring actually---with some bright spots here and there. The second half in fairy land was just horrible.

However, from what I've seen folks comment on for Season 2, it was much, much better than the last half of Season 1 and the useless special. I even did watch the first couple of episodes and while they didn't grab me enough to keep watching, they weren't bad--mostly just SAO not being my thing, I think.

I think you'll like the first half (the GGO arc) of SAO 2. Sinon is an interesting heroine, it does a good job of tying itself back to Aincrad and making it feel interesting, and there isn't any of the weirdness that you correctly identify at the end of Season 1. You also get a good sense of how life moves on (or doesn't) for the SAO survivors, which was sorely lacking in the Fairy Dance arc.

The second half tells two smaller stories:

There is a brief arc that deals with Kirito putting together a group of his friends to go on a quest for a sword in ALO; it's fun, and the fight scenes are fine, though the quest doesn't have the same feel of urgency as the Aincrad or GGO arcs. It's short, however, and if you don't like it, you can always just skip ahead.

The last arc is mostly about Asuna, who makes a friend online and then transfers that friendship to IRL. There is less action (although there is one nice moment of badassery by Kirito), but the story-telling in that section is top-notch (and somewhat bittersweet).

lorreen, you really are on top of your game. I thought it didn't post after I submitted it. I'll get it right eventually.

I will watch the first few episodes and see how I feel after that. Atleast I know now that I wasn't going crazy and that the show did change as it got into later episodes. I think it's too bad it ended the way it did because I use to play a lot of MMORPGs a few years ago and it was interesting to see a anime based off of a game.

mnmike, thanks for the detailed answer. It is starting to sound better than I was thinking. Now I'm curious about Asuna's new friend and how it will make things for her and Kirito.

it doesn't matter. The "Advice, Info, Recommendations" forum is explicitly for personal requests, and it matters not how often something similar has been asked or answered (unlike in the "Discussion" section of forums)

Probably. I am still pretty new to this website and using forums. Sorry if this was posted recently.

I understand exactly where you're coming from, that second arc was so different & tbh cringey at times.

SAO 2 however I would definitely say is worth watching, I did so up until like the last 3 filler episodes to wrap up the season but the main arc of SAO 2 has a good serious tone & has very little fan service in comparison to the second arc.

If you can over look the massive amount of fan service, maybe.

Like nearly everyone, I hated the second arc of SAO. No reason to go into detail here.

I went ahead and watched the second season, and I really enjoyed the GGO arc. Mostly because I <3 Sinon. At the end it devolved a bit, but you expect it with the franchise. The middle arc was kinda "meh" but not Fairy Dance bad. The last arc was very much like a Slice of Life centered mostly around Asuna. I personally enjoyed it.

The second season was enjoyable enough that I will probably watch the third.

I watched SAO2. I enjoyed the GGO arc. It has an interesting story and some good fight scenes.

If you like fight scenes for fight scenes sake, then go nuts with the second arc, Excalibur. However, I thought the story was terrible and entirely without consequence. It was about as exciting as watching Disk Defragmenter at work. I usually marathon anime, however this was the first time I just had to stop and give it a week a few times before I would foolishly regain hope that maaaaaaaaybe the next episode would be better. It can safely be skipped, and you will have missed just about zero story. If you want the spoiler in less than 10 words, here it is:

The final arc, Mother's Rosario, had an enjoyable story where the characters try and adjust more to living outside of a virtual world. I was glad to have watched it. It has more of a sense of purpose for the fight scenes too.

I hope you enjoy it if you do decide to watch it!

I'd still bother watching it. The GGO arc is really cool, and introduces a female character more likable than Asuna. But once again, the whole plot is flawed. People keep dying in virtual games. Here's an idea...stop bloody playing them!

But anyway... the Mother Rosario arc has Asuna at her most annoying, but it introduces another female character who has a genuine valid reason for playing these games. One we can actually sympathise with.

I'm in the same boat. My boyfriend went ahead and watched it, saying nothing has been as good as the first arc, but it's still better than that whole ALO blunder. Be prepared for some drama and a lot of Asuna screen time.
