I wonder if in a few years people will start calling it "Fall Holiday"

Both Eid's go by a different calendar(Islamic lunar calendar) and shift roughly 2 weeks every year. Their will many times when either one naturally falls on a weekend or when school is off for the summer.

I see no problem with it. NYC schools have been getting days off for the Jewish New Year, for decades now. Chances are, they'll most likely extend the school year any way.

How about we just get rid of the whole religion holiday thing. We don't need off for some damn religion. We need off for our workers, veterans, and such. Religion is so stupid. Oh I need off Christmas because of Jesus's birth. Screw you...

I 100% agree with you on the US adapting the Japanese school system. The US is so far behind in education. This is why Americans are stupid...

Thats funny because 90% of the atheist I know including one of my best friends celebrates Christmas with his not so religious family every year. Its something that he would NEVER be able to get out of. Also, sentiment aside, what would not having school off for religious holidays do?If looking at it as a mere numbers game, it would be as good as closed. A few inch of snow and people want off from work and you think they will do either for something they hold dear and believe in?

Not having religious holidays off will make our children smarter. The US is a retarded country when it comes to education. We need to adapt to the Japanese education system. School all year round from Monday to Saturday.

Labor Day and Independence Day are all we have off... I'm thinking having off Veterans' Day, President's Day and Memorial Day. Religion and State need to be separate. If you want off for a holiday request it off. I don't want off some stupid religious day, I rather work and make money.

A few days off of school is the reason why Americans are lagging behind educationally.....Their are much bigger holes in the system than that. Thats like going to a subpar karate instructor for training and saying you would have qualified for a state championship if you only went 8 more days that year.Yes, you'd be a little better, but not much.

Sounds like you need a better job because I get from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day off, with pay, and our boss gives us a Christmas bonus, and that doesn't include the additional money I get for not using my sick days.

Personally it doesn't matter to me what the school decides but to be honest I worry for the future of these kids "not just in NY but everywhere"
Our education system is one of the worst in the world. If America wants to stay competitive they need to copy the Japanese school system.

I don't know about copying Japan's school system outright. Yeah it does a lot of things right, but their main idea of education is just to cram as many facts into the kids' heads as they can. Not to mention it's built entirely around taking exams. And trust me, just because you can pass a test doesn't mean you'll remember what you learned when it's all over.

True I wish the schools taught more practical skills. My favorites were auto mechanics "saves me so much money being able to fix basic problems myself". I always scored pretty decent on tests but really most of what I learned was useless in the real world. The most useful classes for me were auto mechanics, computers being able to type at a decent speed really helps if your interested in an data entry job, and learning basic math. When I lived in Dallas I worked in an antique store and the cash register went out. With a pen and paper "plus knowing the tax rate for TX" I was able to keep making sales and remained open. She gave me a raise and better commission "from 5 to 10% what I sold that day" after she chewed me out for not closing "was afraid that I sold things off price but she didn't know that I mesmerized the price of every item we carried" after she went over my numbers and didn't find a single mistake. "Best feeling ever" After that she gave more room to actually negotiate prices with customers

I want the new generation to be able to handle real world situations and to be able to make it.

This is the kind of topic that should not be discussed on this site. But as a native New Yorker i will say that this is a long time coming. Almost every Christian and Jewish major holiday are respected and celebrated to a point in New York for the most part, so why not Muslim holidays as well? Mind you i say this as a Atheist.

And if your not from NYC then you dont understand just how diverse our schools are. During one of our cultural fests at my high school years ago we estimated that our school represented over 50 nationalities and just about every religion you can think of.
