I'll give you an original one: reasonable suspicion.

Saudi Arabia forbids women from driving on a "scientific" basis, saying that the seated position thrusts women's pelvises forward and causes fetal damage and trouble during childbirth.

Bayer used hundreds of Jewish children in scientific studies to create its aspirin formulas.

Science proclaimed that Africans were only 1/5th human, prolonging the institution of slavery in the United States.

Science gets it wrong, sometimes. Like religion, interpretations vary, and much of what we know is based on who has the most money and influence to spread their ideas.

Furthermore, if we all went with purely Darwinist evolutionary theory, a lot more of us would die. Jettisoning reason in the name of scientific discovery and freedom is why 12-year-olds in Belgium have the right to assisted suicide, why shooting a dog gets you more time in jail than causing the death of someone else's unborn child, why being born with an extra chromosome is means for permanent sterilization (or death, as some of the purely scientific would say.)

Science isn't ethics, isn't morality, and isn't tradition. It's a tool. We should control it, and it shouldn't control us.

I will be up front and say yes science has been and can be abused. Any thing can be, but should that stop the development of new medications using gene testing? The discovery of how the universe works? No it shouldn't what is taught and encouraged is ethical and moral treatment within the confines of the law. There are several on the books now at least in the states that deal with these issues.

This of course is no different from religion being used to justify war, discrimination and enslavement. Religion is also not ethical or moral either though they would claim to be. It is in the end a from of control over a population. Oh lets not forget the burning, drowning, forced conversion and many other atrocities committed in the name of one god or another. This still shouldn't stop people from praying to said gods and ponying up cash for the clergy.

12 years old I suspect with a parents consent since a child that age is a minor and can't sign the consent form legally. Now you will say that the law could be broken true but those that do will be punished under their penal code for it.

how reasonable people are if they doubt science?
Posted 3/7/15
i don't mind if people are skeptical about science... but how can the same people who are skeptical about science cannot do the same for their religion?

most websites i've came across... would say "blah blah science did this wrong blah blah" then the essay will proceed to say, "God is real because magic"...

and am just like wth??? it's absurd and contradictory, if you doubt science, which is real and logical... how can you not doubt religion... which is purely fantasy and... unprovable?

Blindly believing scientists is just as bad as blindly believing some old guys in robes.

Once, I met a man who was a brilliant scientist and a hardcore Roman Catholic. He mixed the two to perfection, like a perfectly plotted equation.

I use logic and reason and sometimes science. I even use religious standpoints. But some science theories are just utter bullshit.

Religion exists to fill in the data gaps that Science needs to create workable theories and explanations. We have lots of repeatable and verifiable data now. Before we did not and invoked a myth to explain it. We now know why the Sun rises and sets, the tides go in and out. There is no reason to invoke a god except to cater to ones fears and insecurity.

Because money and politics wrapped itself around religion, it tends to persist.

Did somebody say that science was created? You can't be serious. Please, tell me they're joking.

The whole idea of Science it that you are supposed to question it!

Science only moves forward when a theory is proven wrong.

A good Scientist wants their theory to be questioned.

It is called peer review. Peer Review requires repeatable and verifiable evidence. Not a myth, not consensus (which is a political tool) and certainly not killing the blasphemous.

Science is never a belief, it is a way of thinking.

Many aspects of science were created. Math is simply a language to get a result, like a language. It only means something because it is universally accepted. Science didn't just fall from a tree, it's the commulation of theories and knowledge put to use.Or are you saying 1+1 was there already?

Easy, because several instances of science are based upon probability. Also, a vast amount of scientific experiments aren't well constructed, and even those that are well-constructed only determine the likelihood of a certain event occurring. However, people who doubt factual information are just ignorant or stupid depending on whether or not they know it. An example of factual information is: When you drop two objects of different or equal weight at the same time then they will hit the ground at the same time. Also, the primary point of view from any scientist or science believing person worth their salt is skepticism. All scientist encourage skepticism as the default approach to anything.
