The cool thing about the Crunchyroll forums is that this is pretty much a judgement free zone.

Yeah it is for the most part, which is why I love it here. But other forums are not as nice at all lol

For about 6 years I only watched dubbed Ghibli films, Pronouncing it "gib-lee". It's only in the past few weeks I've got into other anime on CR. I enjoy dubbed Ghibli films as much as I enjoy other anime today, I would not consider my dubbed Ghibli watching self a "filthy casual" but rather someone who enjoys dubbed Ghibli and never had the time or want to find other anime to watch.

I personally don't like the idea of "filthy casuals" just because said person likes common things / doesn't have the want to explore deeper. This goes for gaming as-well. There evidently are different levels of knowledge and participation but it should not be cause for discrimination / abuse etc..

I'm not a gamer like my brother is whom has to get the latest new game out there like Assassin's Creed.I still have my PS1, PS2 and old gamecube to play on. Once in awhile when I'm stress I still play my old games that helps me feel like a little kid again with no worries in the world, but that's just me. I may be off topic here. lol

Nothing at all wrong being a "filthy casual" of anime . In my opinion I'd say that most of this type of hate is directed at casual watchers who embellish or overstate either how much they like anime or how much they watch. This embellishment can be done accidentally or deliberately, annoying the more hard-core or dedicated fans who see said casual as a fake or liar which in turn provokes hostility.

^^^^ this.

Honestly I consider myself a casual because I don't keep up on the creators or the voice actors very much. Even if i watch a ton of anime there's a few levels where I can't keep up in conversation because of this knowledge gap.

I have nothing against casuals unless they get obsessed with anime culture, at which point they do annoy me a bit. Like someone tellng me they're the biggest anime fan ever, so I try to have a conversation about titles we may have in common only to learn that they've watched nothing but the Naruto and One Piece dubs A lot of people who cosplay are also surprisingly casual as well (at least younger ones). Which again, makes me question if they like the counter-culture misfit aspect of the whole thing more than anime itself.

For the most part though, I think it's cool that they're at least starting somewhere. And I like to give them advice on future series they could get into. I've helped a few people now to upgrade from casual status just by asking what genre they want to watch and then recommending a few titles. It's fun.

I feel like casuals get bad reputation because to the hardcore they feel like posers, like n00blets entering a game. Except they stay noobs.

Labels are so pointless. Just let people like something as much or as little as they want without the unnecessary judgment. If you're super passionate about something then that's cool but don't ridicule someone else for not liking something as much as you.

I thinks it's childish to call names, and to even care about the level of anime-watching another person does.

I've seen more people call themselves a filthy casual than others calling each other that. It seems like they're using it to defend what they're about to say so they won't be judged. Ex: "My favorite anime is Naruto, but I'm a filthy casual, so I could be missing out on better ones." People think it's necessary to defend themselves like that, because people are so quick to judge and call names.

Is myanimelist really that bad? I only made an account just to keep track of what I've watched.
