Sometimes I wonder if anyone truly actually cares about Japanese culture (unless you're actually Japanese lol). I only care about the anime produced and music they make. It's just that the Japanese aren't the only Asians in the world, you feel me? Not that I have a problem if they want to invest their life in it, though. Totally their business

I consider myself a casual anime fan. Not because I like any of the "Big 3," but because I don't spend a lot of time watching it in general. I don't own more than maybe three series on DVD. I'm not particularly interested in visiting Japan. I also don't cosplay, collect figurines or posters, etc. And I don't listen to many OSTs or have any "waifus".

If anyone thinks less of me because of that... well, honestly I don't care.

Pretty sure the term "Carebear" predates WoW though. I am almost certain I recall it being used in Asheron's Call and/or Everquest before WoW's release.

Erm.... Casual until ranked plays or beating all souls series.
Anime is full casual no mater how much you do it. The main goal of it is entertainment no competition, then anime could not be consider a casual or "try hard".

Im sure everyone knows the term "filthy casual" and what it entails.

In the gaming sense, it's defined as --

In our sense, the anime/manga sense, It's a derogatory term used to describe someone who is a casual fan. There's a sense that if you only watch the Big 3 of anime (One Piece, Naruto, Bleach), or if you watch dubbed, you're a filthy casual.

In some ways, this attitude annoys me. A lot. But I understand the idea of "casual" being bad to people who are.more dedicated to these things than others. I get that. But not everyone is on the same level of fandom.

I've seen people be harassed because they said they only like dubbed anime, didnt call Naruto "Na-Lu-To", or don't call anime by their Japanese names.

I see no reason as why to someone who doesn't call it " Ore no Nōnai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Rabu Kome o Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru" is a filthy casual. The English title is easier to understand if you speak English, which, most of us do.

So in all, the things that I'd say I hate about this attitude is--

1. You don't necessarily need to be quote, "an otaku", unquote. You can enjoy anime the same as you would enjoy films, where it's an occasional thing you watch, when you have free time or you want to watch something.

2. Not every anime watcher is interested in reading subtitles and listening to a foreign language they don't understand. I don't watch dubbed anime, but that doesn't mean no one should. There's good and bad to it.

3. Different people like things differently. Each person can like and adhere to a hobby as they want. At the end of the day, anime and manga is just entertainment, and in that there's different ways to enjoy it.

So. What are your thoughts on this?

I find them less annoying that the so called experts that pretty much judge the animation frame by frame and are all about watching it in subs only for the authenticity. And of course, they have watched ALL THE ANIME that ever existed.

But, on the other hand, it's painful to see kinds REALLY getting into Serial Experiments Lain when I kinda bought it when it first came out. (meanwhile, I can tell with damned certainty what's newly licensed of the old titles PDQ because of what's the subject of conversation lately)

Or the whole "FMA BROTHERHOOD WAS TEH AWESUM AND THE ORIGINAL SUCKED!!!" when I watched them contemporaneously and prefer the opposite.

And I feel a bit lonely at being one of the few still watching after so many years, and there's a a LOT of good titles, (some of which I've forgotten for the most part) that I wish I could rewatch or talk to people about....

And there's a general dumbing down of the medium (all mediums really), and focus is aimed towards younger and younger fans, and are having simpler and simpler plots with more and more one dimensional characters... (again. This is totally not just anime. It's all movies and TV.)

But I guess that's more of a thing about just getting older.

No issue with casuals. Issue with casuals who think that they can fanboy naruto as the number one anime meanwhile they have only seen 1 anime.... I don't follow politics intensively and as a result I know my place in conversations regarding politics and don't act like I'm an expert on the subject, I would hope casuals of anime would do the same.

Well, apparently he's not elitist enough. Some of our members remeber titles from the 80's and perhaps earlier... >.>

(akira I think was 89. Plastic Little before that. A few other titles that escape my memory, but NTM. Wait till someone shows up to proclaim themselves an astroboy fan.. @.@ )

i cant speak for the usage of the phrase as pertaining to an anime fan, but in gaming, i use it when someone plays the casually but wants to play in a competitive atmosphere. For example, playing in a ranked, competitive match when they only play "casually", only playing for the sake of playing & not playing to win.

OMG! A FELLOW CHESSIE!?!?! Best shard on all of UO ;). *Bows to Iriomote*.

As funny as it sounds I didn't play either AC or EQ until after WoW came out. I went straight from UO to Horizons and then WoW (with a few minor game stops along the way).

I am definitely a casual when it comes to both anime and gaming. I honestly don't have the drive to be hardcore anymore.

I thought it was "casul"...

But anyway, I hate elitism in any form, from the gaming table with jerks who do turn 5 instant kills to "hardcore otaku" who insist that watching subbed anime is the only way to go.
