I am NOT talking incest here, or cousins, or anything of the like. This would never happen to me because my last name is so rare that if someone shared it, we would have to be relatives, but there are a LOT of really common names out there. Take Smith or Brown. It would not be rare to find someone who shares the name.

Would you be completely comfortable with it? How do you think people would react? There is bound to be misunderstandings with some people, like repeatedly mistaking you for being relatives or married.

For me personally, it would feel a bit weird...

When you do get married there won't be any arguments about hyphenated last names. Also if you have a kid there won't be any confusion who's name it gets.

well it'd be fine a guess. kinda would be nice to keep my last name, cuz i don't wanna deal with that hyphenated crap

but i would double, triple, quadruple check to make sure we're not close relatives

I wouldn't be ok, my last name's so rare you would literally be related to me. I think my family was informed that we're to only family in the world with our last name... and no im not into that incest stuff

If I had a dollar for every person that shares my last name, I'd prolly become a millionaire ._.

I used to mind but now I don't. I've dated someone with my last name before. And I've also dated a cousin before.

Fairly awkward, particularly due to me associating the last name with my paternal side. I have a strained relationship with that side of my family; however, the scenario is palatable, since, as the OP stresses, the rhetorical person isn't notably related. Besides, my surname is pretty commonplace.

I wouldn't really care. So long as it doesn't obstruct the relationship somehow I don't care.

I'd be fine with it. It just means that people would automatically assume you were already married...

It's a slightly different situation, but I once dated a guy who had the same last name as my father's birth name (he was adopted). At first it didn't bother me that much, but then when I started to meet some of his family members, little things here or there would bother me, like how many of them had blue eyes (like my father) and that many of the men in the family were within a few inches of my father in height. Not being able to trace my father's background (he was adopted before everything was computerized and some of his records have been lost), it ended up being a little too weird for me.

That being said, there are a lot of common family names where I live (LeBlanc, Cormier, Arsenault/Arseneau/Arseno, Robichaud, Maillet, etc) so I've seen countless of my friends and classmates growing up date or marry people with the same last name. I guess it probably depends on circumstance and such.

I'd have no problem with that.
Nguyen is a very common surname in Vietnam.

It would be a bit awkward, my surname isn't very common so if that did happen... it'd just be awkward.
