This isn't actually a thread about gay rights, marriage or anything like that (Why do we even need to discuss that issue anyway just let people get married if they want XD).

What i mean is why are males so fascinated by the idea of lesbians and females gay relationships. We have Yuri and Yaoi in Anime and many people will draw that with characters from shows that have nothing of that in it. What is it about these things that people get so invested in?

Take a show like Black Butler for example in Japanese terms it's a show aimed for younger males it's far too violent to be aimed at girls but there are a lot of girls who like the show especially in the west and they make Yaoi pairings of characters. They especially love Grell a comical transgender character and it seems to be a big reason why girls flock to the show about a rich boy who sends his demon butler to kill people.

Why do you think the image of guys kissing guys and girls kissing girls is so fascinating to people especially in the Anime community?

First off, Black butler.. is not Yaoi. Most of those "pairings" you have in mind, are used for comedic purposes.

No ones obsessed with same sex relationships... there's like two or three shows every season that have those elements, as compared to the 10+ shows with heterosexual relationships.

In the words of Kunihiko Ikuhara, "A yuri romance is much more pure than a heterosexual one, it makes it easier for me to add in plot elements without it being overpowered by the romance sub plot" (not the exact quote, since I simply wrote it from memory)

I dont think people are anymore intrigued by same sex relationships in anime anymore than they are heterosexual ones.

It's not just in the anime community though.

American culture is a somewhat more accepting of homosexuality in the mainstream than Japan is, technically speaking, but that's not an absolute. It's not as bad as it would seem to be. For example, this guy is a pretty big star in Japan, or used to be--

There's a certain fascination with the "unnatural" which I guess is what people think when they see a girl and a girl or guy and guy kiss. I like to read the stuff because it's pretty good, but Im straight, and dont think there's anything wrong with it.

I'm no more "obsessed" with bisexual/homosexual pairings than heterosexual ones. Also, Grell Sutcliff is far too hammy to not be popular. He's like Major Armstrong of FMA, and Kamina of Gurren Lagann; his over-the-top characterization is strongly charismatic.

In many cultures, there's a "forbidden fruit" stigma to homosexuality/bisexuality. I imagine that plays some role in things.

isn't it because it turns us on?

or is that reason too simple and crude? I can't think of any other reason.../complex thoughts.

let's be real, we only ship the hot characters together... we never ship ugly ones together. like who actually ships "Choji" from Naruto with any character?

We are all shallow humans here... that's my honest answer.

I don't care about who's gay or who isn't. Who's in an incestual relationship or in a biracial relationship. Love is love and that's all that should matter.

Black Butler was actually supposed to be a yaoi, but it was changed to appeal to a wider audience LOL.

I think you are brushing a very large stroke with your title. Are you obsessing over same sex relationships? I know I am not, and I personally don't know many that do. And, I wouldn't even consider those few to be obsessive anyways.

I can't speak for why somebody would be obsessed with same sex relationships, but I imagine it is no different than being obsessed with anything else.

Gay relations turn me on because, I'm gay myself. In some scenes I discover myself and my pretty kittyboy. So far, this didn't happen before in any other kind of movies. Watching "Love Stage" made be believe being gay is something beautiful for the first time. Being gay has different phases of acceptance and especially "Love Stage" helped me a lot. In a few weeks, I'll fly to Gran Canaria with my lover and we'll spend a week at a resort for gay couples only. Its going to be beautiful.
If you are turned on by watching animes about same sex relations I'd like to thank you for accepting aliens like me and my boy friend and you should consider being gay yourself and discover that thought. Its beautiful and nothing to be ashamed of. I consider the years beween my 16th birthday and the day when I found out I'm gay and had my first time with a friend as wasted. Life is preciousand so is the time we have to spend with those we love. Don't make the same mistake and don't waste any. Be proud of what you are.

I don't think it's an obsession... Some people just make a big deal out of it, because it's a hot topic.

Anyway, I attended a talk where a professor was talking about homosexuality in Japan. She said that it's possible that yaoi and yuri as seen in anime and mangas are a platform for homosexuals and people who support it. For example, there are forums and fangirls who openly support it and make topics and discussions about their "obsessions". Since homosexuality in some cultures such as Japan is not exactly open as the West, people support others or use yaio and yuri (in forums and other ways) as a platform.

Well, that's just an idea. Then again, people have preferences such as tentacles. Who are we to judge?

Yeah, my friends and I were wondering about the same thing. Like, one of my guy friends just said "It's so strange how guys love lesbians and girls hate gay guys" and one of my female friends and I were just like, "What are you talking about. Girls love gay guys." For some reason he didn't really believe us, and he was just like "Really?" Since we didn't want to freak him out with all the yaoi stuff, we just left it at "Trust us, girls love gay guys."
But what I don't get is how us girls are mostly fine with kissing other girls and stuff, and we don't really care if someone is lesbian or not. But with most guys, they're like scared to death of kissing another guy, even if it's on the cheek or something, and a lot of them tend to steer away from gay guys, as if they're gonna "catch gay."

*ponders*

Perhaps it is because all of us are living at a time when same-sex relationships, in several areas of the world, are starting to be accorded the same status, legal or otherwise, as "traditional" relationships? Granted, there's a long way to go before full equality is a thing, but it's changed so much since I was young that I can't help but conclude that we're living at a momentous time for it.
