Male counterparts, single appearances and River Song not withstanding.

Personally, I like all the companions (even in the original seasons), but the one I can't stand is Martha. Don't get me wrong, she's still pretty badass and she's in a few good episodes, but she's pushy with her unrequited love with the Doctor and it felt too over the top for me. I think too many of her on screen minutes are spent focused on her woe-is-me feelings when she should just be enjoying her adventures, like all the other companions do. Anyway, just my opinion! Interested to hear some more.

Clara was cute but i just couldn't stand the latest doctor, beyond annoying. Amy was by far the best out of the newer ones, she seemed to have the most development out of em all. The rest were hit or miss in terms of likable.

Only liked Amy Pond the first season, she stuck around way too long, and she got annoying. I liked Donna the best, because there was no crush on the doctor like all the other companions. I liked Martha second best, because she had some of the best episodes, except for the episodes with The Master, which were all terrible. John Simms' name should have been John Hamm....

Donna is amazing! She sticks true to what I feel a Doctor's Companion should be. I also feel that Amy was around for a bit too long, but I like her character so I didn't mind her, but admittedly, I was a bit relieved when they finally moved on from her. I think Martha was pretty badass, but all the focus on how she wanted the Doctor to love her ruined it for me. That being said, in some of her later episodes she finally branches away from that, so I gained a bit of respect for her at that point... Nonetheless, I just can't come to fully like her. Ah well! At least the Doctor is always awesome, regardless of his companions. :P

edit, because grammar.

I don't mind the newest Doctor! That being said, I've been watching Doctor Who since I was a kind and am fond of the older stuff, and the Twelfth Doctor reminds of some of the older Doctors.

I don't remember much of the older doctors but then again I've been watching it off and on since the 80s

I went in not liking the last 3 doctors but then grew to love their randomness. The new doctor is a great actor i just don't think he fits into the roll of the newer doctors of late. He might of made a great older doctor from the 80s~

I can't disagree with you there! There's definitely a different expectation with the new generation of Doctors, so I can see where you're coming from. To each their own ^.^

Peter Capaldi actually makes a great doctor in my opinion, but he got the shaft with the writing for these episodes. Besides the excellent casting and dialogue between him and the female Master, all the episodes written for him have been pretty unremarkable. I'm thinking they need to get some new writers, and maybe Moffat should pass the torch to someone with some new ideas.

They also butchered Clara's character. I think they probably should have let her move on after the impossible girl arc was finished, because now she has no purpose. Her character was really good when they kept finding her in the Doctor's timeline, but now she's become really self absorbed and just irritating.

I haven't seen the last few episodes with Peter Capaldi, but from I've seen, you hit the nail on the head in regards to the writing. I was honestly surprised that Clara's character went past the impossible girl arc, but she seems to be rather popular with the fanbase (for whatever reason) so I imagine that may have had something to do with her being kept on longer. I'm kinda "meh" when it comes to an opinion on Clara. She could be better, but she could also be much, much worse. At the end of the day, I guess I'm just glad Doctor Who still airs!

The last couple episodes Capaldi really hits his stride as The Doctor, especially opposite Michelle Gomez as The Master. As for Clara, I just think the writers don't really know where to go with her character anymore, as she's already finished her main arc, and is just along for the ride now.

They really need to bring in a fresh companion for Capaldi to play off. If they were smart, they'd bring in someone that could be reminiscent of Susan Foreman. He's older and cranky, bringing up the comparison to William Hartnell. Having him playing a somewhat fatherly figure or grandfather figure could bring up some interesting feelings for The Doctor. They've been playing the romantic angle too much with the last several Doctors, it would be a good change.

I like your POV! I definitely think we're due for a new companion, and you make a valid point - the romance has definitely been overplayed. I was okay with it with Rose because I liked her chemistry with both Doctors she travelled with, but Martha's one-sided feelings were excessive. River Song's romance with the Doctor was alright for me, mainly because it was rather unpredictable and non-typical, and they wrapped everything up nicely. I'm ready for another Donna, but I like your suggestion of someone along the lines of Susan Foreman too. *sigh* they should just fire Moffatt and hire us. I'm sure we could collab something excellent

If I had power over the show, I'd more than likely inadvertently turn it into a horror show, because my favorite episodes are all the scary ones like Blink, Midnight, Doctor's Wife, and Empty Child. I Wouldn't mind doing a spinoff with Madam Vastra, Jenny, and Strax though.

Donna, Donna, Donna, and Donna. So glad she got the ending she did, can't even show up and get involved in an anniversary show or her head will explode. Wait, maybe I want her in an anniversary show....
