Post Reply Preconceived Notions
Posted 3/9/15
I think that alot of people have a lack of awareness of their own preconceived notions about, anything really which creates misunderstanding between people and ideas. Which then leads to navigating through a labyrinth to reach the destination of what the idea/concept really means to that specific person. I was just wondering if anyone has examples of this in there own life that they want to share of people or themselves exhibiting such behavior.

I hope this makes since it's quite the ambiguous question.

I don't have any personal examples off hand, though I've been guilty of housing many harmful preconceived notions in my life that have caused me and others a serious amount of angst and confusion, but I would agree with you that quite a few people probably confuse "experience" with preconceived notions they picked up in their youth or somewhere along the way.

Fact checking is not something that will get you laid.

I have a couple..

When I try to explain I watch anime I usually get things along the lines of "Anime is for children", "you mean cartoons" or "isn't anime that hentai sh*t" etc.

When I tell people or they discover I listen to hip hop, they instantly thing I am incapable of speaking without slang or that I am a 'wigger' who can't have a intelligent conversation, etc. When in fact I listen to many different kinds of music, however I just prefer to listen to hip hop the majority of the time and I am able to appreciate the verses & the rhyming & meaning behind them.

All i have to say is this

I gave up trying to defend stuff like anime long ago. If people want to think i'm into hentai or w/e i just go alright.

Ah, to live life is to stereotype and be stereotyped. Sad but true.

People make presumptions all the time. Sometimes its helpful... (Don't go to this neighborhood at this time of night otherwise you will get your ass shot) Sometimes they are not... (Oh look, a Chinese person, hey must eat cats).

Using your judgement is the only way to keep yourself alive and to keep from rushing to conclusions.

I try never to make assumptions about anyone, even people like Paris Hilton... Who knows, maybe she can be a profound thinker...

Some people think you can be a pro ball player with practice and dedication alone. Like nah, you also need to be born with good genes and grow up with the proper body type. You can build muscle, but the height and flexibility of certain body parts are more important depending on the sport.

You can get pretty far playing a sport, such as college ball or minor leagues, but it's very unlikely that you'll make pro.

Some dude just made a thread here about his opinions on average people. If you check it out, it's full of preconceived notions of how illogical average people are. Ironically, his lack of awareness has led him to believe that he himself is not one of those average people, like most of us. Best way to know if you are an average shnub? Ask yourself if kids centuries from now will be reading about you in their history books, no? Then guess what, you are an average person, just like the billions before you who weren't important enough for people to remember.

I like that....

From a personal point of view;
I got into an argument with my cousin some time ago. I always liked the guy so I'd give him a "pass" on some of the more cretinous things he would say.
Anyway,
He asked me if I was gay, because I had been posting a bunch of pro-LGBTQ things.
I told him the truth, I'm not gay but I was trying to stand up for his kid and our other cousin, who are.
Well . . . apparently, judging by past conversations I thought he might have reservations about these things but for the most part you need to be supportive of people in your family and I thought he was.
Turns out he was a much bigger homophobe, racist and bigot than I ever suspected.
I felt bad for him in being so narrow-minded and stupid, and bad for myself for ignoring the signs that he turned out to be that kind of person....
My preconceived notions....

...

After 30 minutes of rewriting the sentences over and over and over trying to get the meaning, I got more confused...
It's the second sentence it just throws me off.

When I was in high school, I was a metalhead; leather (jacket, vest, hat and boots), concert shirt, earring, the works. I kept to myself, looked kind of dangerous (and like a troublemaker). Teachers hated me from first meeting, girls hung around me/asked me out (thinking I was a bad boy), and punks always came up to me looking for fights. Pretty much everyone got surprised that I was actually shy, a good student (B+ average) and likeable. After a while, the teachers stopped bugging me, the girls stopped hanging around me/asking me out and I became friends with the punks that were picking fights. Someone asked me if I was a poseur one day, not quite knowing what he meant by that I said "no, I'm a drummer and hopefully a keyboardist eventually...I'm working at it".
