If I go by the history of Hollywood adaptations it's either going to be a feature that's not terrible but it should not be named after what it's based on, or so cringeworthily bad that I need to be put on oxigen because I can't stop laughing.
The latter happening quite a bit more often than the first.

There hasn't been a middle road, nor a feature that really sprung out and to be fair, I don't expect much of this one.

I love in Ghost in The Shell. Unfortunately, the end result of Hollywood's attempts, it won't resemble what GiTS really is about, or like.

What scares me is, I heard the first person they chose for the lead role was Kristen Stewart. WHAT?!

Right now, we don't know much about the proposed story details, so I'm willing to wait and see what happens next. On the plus side, ScarJo is a good actress that can handle action very well. She alone will help to draw in a diverse audience, which will be important for a film like this. Movies don't make money by targeting a small audience. And GitS is more about "the soul" than "the body" so, they could go the route that this is a spiritual successor to the original GitS movie; i.e. Kusanagi is in a different body.

In any case, based on the details I've heard so far, it sounds better than the travesty that was going to be the Akira remake.

The Akira live adaptation has been in development hell for almost 20 years--your fear is probably misplaced.

Edit: Anime fantasy and fantasy should remain how they are.

For example: Lord of the Rings shouldn't get an anime adaptation and Haganai shouldn't get a Live action adaptation. Why? Because people are going to Compare them to the original straight away. And majority of the time it's going to be a 90%+ dislike on the second adaptation.
