Lets say you tell someone that he/she is smart, what do you mean with that?

If someone is "smart" does that person have large amount of knowledge of one or several subjects? the person have high intelligence/IQ? or that the person have lots of wisdom? Maybe a combination of two or all three? Is there any other factor you consider when calling someone smart?

if i consider someone to be "smart", i usually mean that they can provide a deep insightful comment on a given subject, and explain them in a logical and coherent manner.

its contextual of course, but the everyday sense of it is that they are capable of themselves. basically they make good choices.

i am defining as is due to this phrase "Jimmy wouldn't go off into the wood (or other dangerous or unfavorable activity), he's a smart kid you know"

i think someone smart has the potential for a high iq or shows quality of it, that they gain enough experience or knowledge to be considered somewhat wise.

it makes me think, when it is used for school. is it for there ability to easily absorb things or that they are willing to put out the effort for it in the sense that they made the good decision to work hard to gain a better understanding.

Uh... I guess it would be based on their grades.

I am a smart idiot. I make good grades, and I know how to make good grades, but I act like a complete idiot most of the time.

humans rely heavily on communication/ability to read situations/body language as indication of intelligence... without realising there are various forms of intelligence... and the best communicators are not often the smartest... although the ability to organise thoughts and speech is one type of intelligence.

My definition of smart depends on who I'm talking to. As it's such a broad and versatile term, it's one of the words that I let the other person define before I offer any input on it in conversation.

I myself equate intelligence to the logical process (actual logic, not reason or practicality, which many mistakenly call logic - I don't care about what's better, I care about what's true), as well as creativity. Someone who is able to think of a novel solution for a problem is someone who I would personally refer to as "smart." I'm not inclined to include good judgement in my definition, especially spur-of-the-moment decision-making, as I feel that's more in the purview of "wisdom".

yeah, i dont really get the conpect of smart.
people think i'm smart. a lot.
i don't see me as smart. i just think out side the box. every thing ive ever done that other found so impressive is just stealing others knowledege, fitting it together, and taking the next step. i do very little.
so i dont really get the idea of smart.
