time for a very sad thread.

In America 2009 it was said that 18% of Americans believe that earth was under 10,000 years old. National Science Board has asked Americans if they accept the idea of a young earth and almost 2 out of 10 Americans agree with that. That is over 62 million Americans believe that evolution is wrong and earth was made a just 6,000 to 10,000 years ago.

IN my opinion that is scary, proves just how shifty Americans educational system really is. With all the evidence we have for how the earth is, we still have so many ignorant people living in this country makes me think what the fuck is wrong with 18% of Americans.

Discus your opinions on Young earth, and what you think about the people who believe in it.

You are approaching this issue from a one sided and condescending stance to begin with. This serves no purpose other than to inflate your own ego.

Stop caring: is a bad idea. Tell me what happens if there is a leaky pipe, do you just stop caring, did that stop the damage the pipe is doing? Over time the damage even gets worse, so how is that problem solved?

I am approaching this issue from a fact based position, is that wrong?

LOL and your ego is not involved wen speaking about your opinions...? Hell it seems to me like your ego is the one getting in the way of making the topic a worthy topic not mine. I gave a platform for a debate on a topic, and you did not want to debate on it do to your own over inflated ego. (thank you very much for posting.)

I don't believe the Earth is 3 billion years old. In fact, I think it is less than 15,000 years. Throw me all the dinosaur fossils and radiocarbon dating all you want, I'm still not convinced. I don't think it's such a big deal though, but if you wanna call me an idiot, go for it.

I don't know. He is being condescending to a degree, but this is a problem. People ignore so much science and facts about the age of the earth and the age of the universe only because it conflicts with some things found in the Bible. Anybody in America who wants to be Christian can be, that is fine, but too many Christians deny a lot of science only because it doesn't align with some things written in the Bible. It is really sad. Don't tell me that humanity started only 6,000 years ago from only two people. It isn't feasible. First of all, how could you get a great diversity of people (black people, white, east Asian, Indian and Arab, etc.) in only 6,000 years worth of time? Secondly, if everybody came from only two people a mere 6,000 years ago...welp, that means humanity is one big family of in-breds!

These same people still deny climate change, a very real thing which threatens the future of humanity. These same people deny all facts and science related to sexuality, causing them to keep believing that being gay is "a lifestyle people choose", causing many of them to be ignorant on the matter and preventing many of them from being more understanding of the matter, which would make many of them become more reasonable towards and more compassionate towards gay individuals.

These same people don't do proper sexual education, leading a number of red states, such as Texas, with high rates of teen pregnancy (that isn't the only thing, it leads to other issues).

With the way many Americans are, it is no wonder that America is falling way behind in science (in our school systems). This shouldn't be the case for our nation.

I mean, one more thing to put out there in this post...these people, what is their explanation for as to why we can tell the universe is billions of years old because we can observe galaxies as they were long, long ago? "That isn't light from billions of light years away, all that light just happens to travel much, much faster than the light near us" ... Seriously? Man, wtf. smh...

Hey, just be happy there hasn't been a percentage made for the people who think the world is 2015 years old.

Right on the money. I don't really believe that statistic either, having the benefit of constantly traveling throughout the US and finding my self now in the bible belt where these types of beliefs are most common I don't believe for a second that I would find 18% of people to have this opinion. Statistics can be skewed and misinterpreted, there are definitely factors here that aren't being accounted for.

The earth is obviously old but the sun has it beat. How old do you think the sun is?

the length some people go to to make their religious tales seem consistent and real... I've even heard people saying 1 bible day = 2 billion years or something so that it becomes consistent with recent science.

we know the Earth isn't thousands of years old, because evolution is a process that takes millions of years, so at least it's millions of years old if you don't believe in carbon dating, but then... the same people who think it is 6000 years old are the same ones who deny evolution...

it's a vicious cycle you can't ever break...

The people who believe this will never change, so your 'pipes' will never be fixed. Unless you want to take the children away from the parents that teach their kids that?

You are starting a thread about something that is generally considered fact already just to insult the people that don't accept it.

This was never a worthy topic, there was never a platform for debate.

If they are insulted by a fact, then why not take the chance to explain them selves and why they don't agree with the facts. (its what you call debating... And was the point.)
