Personally I think it's over-hyped. Anyone can take a shot just to get noticed. Does the industry really need an unknown taking shots at the vets. Or do these unknowns need to let their music speak for themselves. Even some vets do it to re-establish themselves, but in the end it comes off as a cheap gimmick. So is it needed in an industry when things can escalate even though there was no original malice? Discuss.

TO ME I THINK BATTLES ARE NEEDED. IT SHOWS IF AN ARIST HAS REAL SKILL OR NOT. BATTLES ARE PART OF THE FOUDATION OF HIP HOP THOUGH IT HAD VIOLENT TURNS. KRS AND MC SHAM, COMMON AND CUBE, 2PAC AND BIG, FREEWAY AND CASSIDY, JADA AND BEANIE, NAS AND JAY LL AND CANIBUS(CANIBUS WON BTW). A MC'S TRUE SKILL COMES OUT WHEN IT IS TIME TO BATTLE.

i know for sure 50Cent does it for plablicity.... but Nas doesnt fit the mold you discribe..... i wouldnt go as far as saying battle rap is a cheap gimmick.... its been around ever since early hip hop..... battles can occur with no ill will resulting.... i also feel that its one of the best ways for a mc/rapper to display his/her lyrical skills.... its so much more challanging that just recording in a booth... they are No retakes/do overs... & plus you have to compete....

I dont know if youve ever heard of the rap olympics (i think) but the best upincoming mcees go there to compete & display their talents

As far as the esclating instances.... its stupid.... but these rapper are from, or claim to be from the streets, so they have to portray a certain image.... tho some of these Beefs legitamatly start in the streets.... gang/hood rivalrys....

Those are just the highlights of battles though. What about the stuff you don't hear about. What you brought up was basically the cream-of the-crop and their very minute compared to all of the other people just trying to get their name out their. It doesn't take a lot of skill to dis someone, hell we all learned how to do that growing up. It might be fun when it drops, but it's just perpetuating the stereotypes.

I've heard of the rap olympics and a couple of really good emcees have come out of it to have good careers, but the market as a whole is over-saturated and not all battles are done face to face. Take 'Pac for instance, he has some of the best battle raps to date, but were any of those done with 'Big, Jay, Nas,or tha Mobb standing next to him. I'm all for battling in its raw form. What I have a problem with is artists putting out a song over the radio and dropping names just to get a spin. To me that shows no class.

True but Pac rolled with Death Row & they packed guns & were gang affiliated.... to this day if somebody says they gonna kill me im not gonna take that shit lightly.... you dont just go up to people with guns & talk shit to their face unless you have guns & plan to use them & get shot at....

Back then i dont think it was so much about publicity.... Ive even heard this on the Tupac documentaries.... the MEDIA Blew it out of proportion... it started as 2 people who just were at odds..... and ended up being East vs West.....
