Eggshells people, eggshells for days.

What are your thoughts on the use of this word in conversation?

We all know the "rules" right? Black and Latino can say it in public, everyone else best watch their tongue.

How does that make you feel?

Knowing the history of the word what are your thoughts on how it is used today?

P.S. eggshells people... Be polite, be serious.

[note from a mod:
I've reopened this, because I think it's possible to have a serious and respectful discussion even about controversial things.

I've removed the inappropriate responses (primarily responses that degraded to personal attacks rather than centering on the topic). As we continue, remember, don't insult others. It's okay to disagree, but do so in a respectful way. If your conversation with another is deteriorating, just stop responding (and report the other person if they continue anyway). Don't continue and just make it worse.

Also, please trim quotes, and don't create "pyramids."

Thank you.

Only niggas got nigga privileges, ya feel?

Unless you're the woken-up-from-coma Martin Luther King in an alternate history. Then you get real n-word privileges to get a bunch of niggas to PLEASE shut the HELL up and listen to you rant about modern black culture for a while. And then announce your departure for Canada.

So yeah um, anyway. I'm all for word reclaiming.

It depends on who you ask in the African American community, as some will say neither is acceptable and don't agree with the use of the ---ga word as it is a form of a word used to dehumanize people.

As such from the outside, I find neither acceptable at all, but won't criticize anyone within the community using either word as it isn't my place to tell those who have been oppressed by that word how they should feel.

I don't really get offended at all when people use that word. Of course if someone uses it with a bad vibe, then maybe.

When my black friends call me that, I somehow feel very honored and I call them the same.

Just try not to use it in front of someone you don't know or just met.

It's weird. Depending on who says it , it varies between "my buddy, my pal", to "Negro". A deeply-rooted double standard, it is, but in it's historical etymology and context understandably so. It calls into mind a past a lot of people would just as soon forget happened.

One of the things we don't talk about, apart from Fight Club, ha ha.

Interesting to see that perspective actually. You never get any weird looks when you say nigga back to any of your friends? Now how do you feel when someone says you can't say that word?

I don't say it. My friends are just "friends" or "bros." Occasionally, "stupid," but no derogatory terms that insult ethnicity, gender, religion, etc.

People I hangout with nowadays gets a "N_gga Pass".

Supposedly that allows you to hold privilege to say the word without consent? Tell me that's not true..

I think this term especially is one we need to stop using entirely. It's history and controversy has been debated for several years and honestly, it just breeds more and more hate. There are people who use the word all of the time, the young, the old, and the in-between. Really though, I can't believe for a second that anyone who has used the term has ever believed they wouldn't get flak for it. No matter who you are, you know the facts backing up the word, and should be prepared for any arguement that ensues. Though the young need to be more educated, and it is something that is important to know about, especially in American History. (I know I said the word should not be used anymore, I meant in its casual sense). Regardless, people will be people, and there is always one person who will take what you say and be offended by it.

Bullshit, dude. I'm tired of that pity crap that some African Americans use. Sorry but it annoys me when some of them pull that crap.
