I have always been perplexed by the use of the word "deep". I always assumed that it meant that someone said something that is very much insightful and analytic, but many people also connote this word with basically any substance behind a statement or a statement regarding something personal.

What does the word "deep" mean or connote to you? Do you believe most people use this word correctly?

Edit: (And for that second question above, no, I am not talking about deep as in actual physical depth for those wiseguys out there).

But that's what it is, depth. Whether it's a depth of distance or a depth of meaning in a statement you make.

Deep is anything that isn't shallow.

I always use "deep" as a cheap way to comment after something has been said that is emotionally tearing. Usually accompanying a goofy face. Y'know, to make light of the situation. Sometimes it gets awkward when you don't know what to say when you're talking about emotional subjects.

My definition is more or less synonymous with "insightful", and I think that most people have the same definition for this word. Most people don't, however, have the same idea of what qualifies as a deep comment, if that makes any sense. What might seem deep to some people could sound pretty cheesy to others. This is because different people value different things. For example, you include "analytical" in your criteria, but someone else might prefer emotional depth, or creative depth, or practical depth. or any number of other things. Deep means insightful, but there are different things someone can say something insightful about.

I also think that people are prone to using the word when they don't mesh well with the values system the comment is on. A comment made by someone who's in tune with their artistic side, and which is about something artistic, might be prone to being called "deep" by someone who doesn't "get" it, because they're not inclined to think that way, but want to be nice or provide solidarity. Meanwhile, that comment might be considered cheesy by others who have the same values as the commenter, if it's not actually particularly insightful.

"Man, That's Deep!" can be a reply to comments such as:

"Wow! Dude, look at the size of the hole you made on the wall!"
"Man, just listen to that bass drop bra?"
"Hey, look how far I can shove my fist down my throat!"
"Hey, my boyfriend just sent me a really touching message about his love for me. Wanna see?"
"Oh, no! someone's drowning in the pool! Someone go save him!"
"Hey, I got a coin stuck in my nose, can you help me get it out?"

Hope that helped.
