I'm out of High School, but what the hell is the point of this. It's slightly old news, but I never got to the nitty-gritty of it.

Please tell me why 2 + 2 = 4 is now wrong.

Because parents don't like when their kid feels left out and excluded. Everyone is a winner so everybody is right no matter what answer they come up with.

Common Core just sucks in general.

Common core is shite, I wish my state would get rid of it, causes all kinds of problems concerning what classes you have to take and just overall sucks. I honestly don't understand why it exists as classes were perfectly fine to me.

It makes me wonder for my children one day. I can't really say, "Here's 2, now just add 2, and you'll get 4" anymore.

You apparently have to do a lot more steps for the answer of 4.

Because the federal government's "one size fits all" approach is the solution to all of our problems... even if the policy they're trying to endorse benefits no one.

Oh god that's obnoxious. People who want to become teachers these days, especially at the high school and lower levels, have to take a bunch of classes in education theory which are basically just a bunch of bullshit. I think this is the result of that. The teachers who teach education theory have to make it seem like they're doing something, so they come up with unnecessary crap like this.

Oh ho no, this junk started before common core, I was put though the horrible "new wave" math education as a kid too and common core didn't exist then.
Common core forces teachers to teach for a test and not for knowledge and punishes underperforming schools when they dont do well even though they need the most support. That is the real issue with common core, not crappy new ideas on how to teach math that was happening regardless.

What? Is that a real thing now? Kind of reminds me of that Tom Lehrer song about the "New Math".

Well, if it doesn't work out, kids will learn math on their own regardless. You kind of have to in order to understand what you're doing anyway.

I do think it's better to make things as intuitive as possible though. Hopefully they don't go too crazy lol

Wait is this really how they do math now? This is ridiculous. I mean i am in Calculus 2 where I take limits of integration and find the vloumes of shapes that don't make sense. Showing ridiculous steps is a must in Calculus though. But this....All for 568-293. But we just accept what everyone thinks to be right apparently.

People need to stop teaching in experimental bullshit ways and go back to basics. I couldn't get past algebra in high school because they used this bizarre computerized system instead of teaching me, where I had to take like a thousand small tests throughout the year to "learn from my mistakes" or something. That in turn gave me a complex about algebra and I ended up struggling with it in college as well. And eventually I dropped out because of it.

Pretty weak because I had always been ahead of my class in math until that point, and I even passed this supposedly difficult high school exit exam math test with higher marks than the majority of students in advanced classes like pre-calc. Something like 75% of my peers failed it.

If I ever have kids, they're going to private school.

Well there we have it, if Tom Lehrer was singing about it then we know that this has been complained about long before common core.

That looks really confusing...is that supposed to help kids or confuse the hell out of them?

Isn't it longer and more roundabout doing it that way?
