Not to be totally caustic or terse but the problem to me, is like, "stop making stupid people famous."
If you do not contribute then they get board and go away.

Whether or not that idea would work remains to be seen.

Some people are going to want to use a place like this for their outlet of ideas.... good or bad. We can react with tolerance and reason, vehemence and indignation or apathy.

We could also complain to the management.

I'm not too sure befriending some of these people would be useful or even possible. Generally I like to think that everyone needs a friend but some people just have it in their heads that everyone else is "the enemy," or stupid.... (If you think every one is stupid, they will come around to thinking and treating you the same way.)
It is hard to help people if they think they need no help, just ask any reforming addict. That might be the thing, some of these people could be considered addicts, it is just that their addiction is attention or even confrontation. Many of my aunts like to pick fights with people. They are even depressed and out of sorts if they don't get into an argument at least two or three times a week... I don't' know what different types of personality disorders that covers but I'm sure there are at least a few.

Just something to consider.

We could not really expect a very large group of users such as the one here on CR to suddenly be able to put on a non-responsive act since users rotate in and out constantly. Besides, some just could not turn away from the taunting as I have said. In addition, even if it is successful the reformation of the individual would be slower in coming

Assuming that the troller is not incorrigible, an idea I have is first try to inform them of their improper action. It could be the case that some simply either don't realize what they're doing or realize that what they're doing is wrong. We should first give them that chance of genuine inclusion and engagement.

This is a proper time to be selfish. Instead of wanting to "help" these people, just do yourself a favor and ignore them all together. If you really want to better this forum, for every thread that becomes a flame war, you should make two fresh, unique threads. That's what I've been trying to do, anyway. To divert others' attention from the scandalous threads to something more care free. It doesn't matter if old threads are brought back or new ones are made. You just have to do more than them.

If I may be blunt, this thread doesn't help the cause. The people you're indirectly talking about will see this, and combust with even more threads you're trying to prevent. People take the time to say what will or won't work, but until someone actually tries to do something, things will stay constant. I respect the mods' decisions, but I wish they would just lock threads that someone got banned in. Have that one person be the reason everyone lost the thread. It's a punishment that will make others think before posting.

Sounds like you want to troll the trolls.

That is not my intent.

I agree with the ignoring but making new posts won't help, CR seems to not have a rule against necroing threads. A troll will just either go in search for more threads or they will just generally make new ones.

The thread where it says, "I know more about Love than you do since I have a wife" is really asking to get a response.

Or a thread where it says, "my kind is still a minority and every thing we get interested with is always cool" makes me want to check it twice.

The best troll and used to be a forum mod was mushroomjay. Period.

I'm talking about people who purposefully get others angry at them. Are you sure that was what the mod was doing?

I'm also trying that, but please see my reply to GrateSaiyaman above.

Yup.

He's a clever, crude one. He mostly had a final saying (post) before he used to lock a nonsense/duplicate thread.

Well, if he really was trying to get people angry at him then he was not doing the right thing... He should have locked threads without the goading.

They see me trollin'
They hatin'. Trying to catch me writin' dirty.
Tryin' to catch me writin' dirty..

My posts so rude.
Offensive.
They hopin' they gone ban me fo' more'n thirty...

Ahem... lost in the moment there. I can't say I've ever seen a troll who wasn't fully aware of what they were doing, so I'm not sure what telling them, "Trolling is bad" would accomplish, they've already made an informed decision to troll.

In the end it primarily falls on the moderators to nip it in the bud. The most one could hope for on the community's end is to avoid encouraging trolls and report them.

Sometimes people start theads just to get others upset or angry at them and subsequently lure others into heated debates (almost always about religion).

What makes them that way? More importantly, how can they be helped? (I do think they need help.)

Get more mods to ban the living shit out of people who are trying to start a religious flame war.

By not knowing, I meant in the sense that some don't realize what is bad about bringing a sort of suffering to others. Perhaps the realization would give pause. I'm hoping for a way to change the interaction other than a cutting off, which may not be possible or immediately helpful to that person.

I looked at it as a random joke since everyone has to eat...
Anyhow, do you think it would help if we confront them in a constructive manner?
