I've been to places where there are no trolls they are hard to find but they do exist. Half the time the guy isn't even trolling he just telling the unpopular opinion of the given area. If I made a thread called "holy shit all anime sucks how do people watch this crap?" people are probably not going to enjoy it, but If I make a thread called, "Holy shit Justin beiber is a dumb shit why does anyone like him?" people will mostly just agree with you lol. But if you make that same thread in some other place it could be trolling.

Like honestly if I made a thread that says, "anime is good but american animation is generally better in quality." yeah people aren't going to like that even tho I think that to a certain degree. I think most trolls just don't have good social skills and can't detect when their input isn't wanted... You just have to be accepting of people views and opinions to not get trolled or be a troll.

btw code geass and no game no life suck. lol. <- unpopular opinion.

I looked at it as a random joke since everyone has to eat...
Anyhow, do you think it would help if we confront them in a constructive manner?

I don't know.
I don't think a troll would waste a large amount of time to be reasonable. You might be putting more effort, even correcting your grammar, and you might ended up receiving a quick one or two word response from a troll.

Sometimes to kill a troll is by another troll. That troll would already know if trolling undergoes. Hence, the user I mentioned before.
Not to mention, a former troll would know the difference between trolling, jokes, dispute, unpopular opinion, etc.

That's a very good point but I'm thinking of those who purposefully goads others into fights, almost like bullying. I think they could be reformed, and an attempt at reconciliation should be made.

I think it is awfully hard to do any of that, first off you have to prove to them that they are a troll, even if they are aware they probably don't care... you have to play on their terms for them to change, because you have to convince them to stop or what not. You simply do not know enough about the person. A true troll to me would be somebody who just says things to make others angry, like even if they don't actually think that way. They would change their views just to piss people off. But even then, it is not perfect they can just give a reason bullshit or not. Unless the troll states that the only reason why he said things was to piss off the person but they rarely do that... I just try to bait the troll out by throwing in a few words like shithead, and if they start getting angry I leave.. but that could be considered trolling lol.... are two trolls fighting each other still trolls? aren't they just friends because they are both getting what they want from each other? They could also just be classified as mean people. Aren't we all trying to get some sort of reaction to when we post in a thread? hell I am trolling right now? probably not just cause I am being polite if I said some words like "shithead", "is it really that hard to figure out?" or "why does it matter" then suddenly I might be... News headlines troll all the time with their headlines being hooks lol. "does Obama even like american?" LOL.

I mean if you try to prove anything on the internet you seem like a troll... like if I wanted to say 1+1 doesn't equal 2 people would think that is troll even though there are ways to make it so.

Trolling character in like a anime/story are easy to state as a troll because you see a lot of their actions. You simply don't have enough info to know if some random guy from the internet are trolls or not. It is mainly somebody who is just mean with words quite often. It is just hard to tell what they intended to happen.

I am part troll I said some video on youtube was shit hoping to get a reaction and I did. I didn't like the video... I thought it was shit quality. I knew people weren't going to like that opinion but I wanted to say it still... not that big of a deal.

Shit why do I end up with such big posts I hate it.

Just curious (don't worry ain't gonna kill you ;-) ), why did you dislike ngnl and code geass? I almost died from fanboying too much over them, especially ngnl, it was so pretty and exciting and the characters were so cute <3

Ignoring the trolls is a pretty good rule of thumb, but the fact is that even ignored trolls will keep tossing bait. It has been eight days since someone responded to the "The Truth About Corporal Punishment: Proof" thread, and yet guess who keeps editing the OP to bump it? It doesn't matter if people post in that thread or not, it's not going away until it's locked. At this point I'm just waiting for the OP to become the entire first page.

Some people either want to drag another groups name through the mud or drag someone into a pissing contest.

It occurs to me that I didn't actually answer the prompt of the thread. I expressed how we can help ourselves, and I cited an exception to that method's effectiveness, but I didn't say how the trolls themselves can be helped.

We know nothing about the trolls we see and speak with. We can't even as much as assume they're alone when they're trolling, or that the same person is authoring every post. A troll you're arguing with could in fact be a group of bored teenagers looking to amuse themselves by laughing at your replies to incisive comments they don't even believe or support. Even the fact that you reply could be enough to entertain them if they're easily amused. Alternatively, they might not be physically together, but may have met online and agreed to coordinate and troll a chosen place for the same reason. We don't know anything about them, so how can we presume to know how to help them (or if they even need help)? For all I know the trolls are winning bets every time they manage to get a crazy thread to break a certain amount of pages.

Just don't feed the trolls, ignore them before you become a troll bait. Eventually, they will get tired of trolling the same person unless you give them bait.

Sometimes people start theads just to get others upset or angry at them and subsequently lure others into heated debates (almost always about religion).

What makes them that way? More importantly, how can they be helped? (I do think they need help.)

Between those of us who do enjoy the theological discussions (which will always have trolling from both sides), and the lack of age by most users on this site...It will only be helped if everyone comes out with a thread that simply agrees to disagree lol. Then the focus shifts from making the other party see my truth to a discussion of why each party holds their beliefs, how they got there, and obtain a true understanding of both side's attitudes. The bulk of these conversations are not intelligent, and it is hard to curb immaturity when it is something people take extremely personal therefore getting easily offended/defensive. But no, some people just enjoy the drama and constantly rehashing the same debates that they have had a million times before. It is entertainingly frustrating reading all of these 20 year olds or younger butcher both theological arguments and scientific research though; however, it is refreshing when that one user posts a well thought out retort that makes wading through the trolls worth the actual words of substance.

Maybe we should start a new thing that when any particular thread starts getting out of control between users a third party calls both users out with a funny meme that encourages calm, peaceful dialogue rather than assertive, aggressive force feeding of ideologies that tend to take place.

Perhaps this.

As far as I can understand, trolling has been around since people started talking to each other over the internet. It will NEVER EVER go away. You might be able to help some, but you can't help them all. And that's not to say that all trolls are full time trolls. Some people will only troll when they feel like it, or certain things. In fact, I'd wager that eveeryone who participates in online communities of any kind have trolled or will troll at least once in their life. Best thing you can do is ignore it.

While I haven't seen code geass yet, I'll admit I wasn't that big a fan of ngnl. Sure there was some amazingly ridiculous over the top moments (dat chess game), but for the most part the use of the loli/incest/harem tropes was just bleh.
