Wow, not to make light of the situation, but now I'm starting to understand why so many anime protagonists often have missing parents due to work.

I think this also sheds some light on many of the issues that seem to be plaguing Japan, such as being looked down on if you're not giving 120% at work each and every day (and most of the night), the lack of mental health care, as well as the social stigma of being diagnosed with depression, but not being able to do anything other than to "man up" and not talk about it.

Unfortunately as this video shows, it's becoming a bigger problem in Japan. It's little wonder why Japan has such a high suicide rate when you're constantly being told at work that you need to work well into the night, with no extra pay of course. They too worry about losing their job if they don't do what the boss tells them.

This also helps shed a little light on their falling birth rate as well. Guys are usually so overworked that they have little time to go on dates, or spend time with their girlfriends/wives. So when you see those pictures of guys spending time with a 2D girlfriend such as those hugging pillows, think about this video, and the other ones in the link such as people living in the internet cafe because it's cheaper than renting an apartment.

So what do you think Japan should do to help address this issue? Ignoring it is one option, but I can't see this being good for them in the long run, especially with the falling birth rate issue.

So if ou made murders look like suicide you'd get away with it.

Good read OP, good read.

Actually, from what I learned studying for my (soon-to-be) Japanology degree's economy class, the problem seems to be getting less the last decade or so, not worse. I might reply more later, but dinner is ready now so gotta scram!

Also, hug pillows are awesome, I want one but money. and I don´t want a relationship, much too much trouble, I just have fun with random people/pervs. XD

Also 2d peoples > 3d ones :3

But see you all later, foodz time!

Women have to choose between careers and pregnancy, too, because young mothers are usually booted out of the workforce. Admittedly, though, Japan's work ethics/hours currently wouldn't allow time for two working parents to care for children, with daycare hardly being an option.

Yes. Coupled with school work, this is why it's rare for parents to be seen in anime and manga, especially fathers. It reflects how it's common for Japanese children and adolescents to only see their parents a few hours a day, if at all. Plus, it's pretty common for Japanese teenagers to live alone in apartments paid for by their parents, usually so they can be close/closer to schools.

As you may know, the pressure of Japanese schooling greatly contributes to Japan's suicide rates, as well.

They work 6 days a week, with Sundays off. Many EU countries have 4 day work weeks and ours is 5.

The Japanese work too much, if they don't kill themselves the stress will.

Don't students in japan also go to school for 6 days a week?
I hear Japan has the highest suicide rate, I don't really doubt it...

Perhaps they work too much, but I feel the west could learn from this work ethic.

Japan is very strange. Most of their offices and school systems are barely more advanced than 1960 America. Paper systems, manual accounting, etc etc. High suicide rate, and a birth rate that's falling has Japan as losing 30 million people in under 40 years. That's what, a decline of 30+% of their population?

Don't be loyal to your employers. They don't care about you because everyone is replaceable. Smart people are loyal to themselves. If someone else offers you more pay, better perks, just take it. Loyalty is such an outdated concept to have in today's working society.

Also if someone is causing you so much misery that you are going to take your own life, why not take out a couple assholes first then kill yourself?
