If we're speaking on the actual definition. Then no it's not a sport, it's a competition. Sports are competitions involving athleticism. I've been gaming since day one and playing sports since I can walk, there's no athleticism in gaming lol.

Now is gaming an "eSport."
Hell yeah

Personally, I'd say so. Sports don't have to be Physical, or Contact. Just like Debate. In High School, I considered My Debate Club to be a Sport.

Even as sombody who wants to develop games, I don't want them becoming a sport. I don't consider them a sport - they're a game.

As long as I've been playing and as much as I love video games, I don't consider them a sport. I'm not a huge fan of "actual" sports either, but I feel for something to be called a sport, it must involve a substantial amount of physical activity.

No.

That's like asking if professional knitting is a sport.

There are worst things than games being considered a sport. Like how the hell did this become a good idea.

No, I don't consider it a sport. I love video games, but I don't consider sitting down and pressing buttons a sport. The most sport-like feel of video games I had ever experienced in video games would probably come from the Wii and it's Wii Sports and various exercise/fitness "games" that it offers.

If and when Gaming became a sport the shelf-life of the 'pro-gamer' would be incredibly short. To perfect ability in one game means turning a new leaf when going to the next game. E.G the best tetris player would have a hard time using his skills to beat the world's best Street fighter player. The career of the player depends on the popularity of the game and pool of competition.

Could gaming be mass marketed to live audiences one day like Dota and LoL already are (as seen in vice documentaries): YES, for sure.
Can you comfortably make a living off a job like this: 99% NO because the skill you perfect will be in a game unlikely to be timelessly adored.

That said, I hope I'm wrong about this.
