Hello and thanks for reading my Season and Filler Guide on Naruto Shippuden.
I have marked every season with Spoiler Alert! quotes to prevent spoiling the story should you read into the thread, however! I have made sure to be VERY careful spoiling anything, even commenting on the seasons. Stuff like death, power milestones and in general dramatic plot points are not included, so it's very light on spoilers, if there even are any to begin with.
Each spoiler quote has been marked at the bottom with bold text for you to see which episodes are fillers, should you wish to skip them. If there are no bold text displaying what episodes are fillers, it is because there are none for that season at all should there be any doubt.
At the bottom of this thread I'll include a total of episodes and fillers.
Each and everyone of them are described by starting with how many episodes
there are in each season , followed up by a total of how many of said episodes are fillers.
Season 1 (32 Episodes, 0 fillers)
We start off strong with season 1, not having a single filler on the roster, maybe with the exception of Team Guy vs their clones, but arguably only a semi-filler
and one episode containing flashbacks where we get to learn of Sasori, but nontheless a great solid start and first season just simply delivers.
Season 2 (20 Episodes, 0 fillers)
Another strong solid contribution to the lore of Naruto. Only a couple of episodes that are light weight, but still can't be classified as fillers, since they
quite clearly contribute to the overall plot. The lightweight episodes I speak of are the ones where we get to know Sai, but still worthy of being called actual progression in the story.
Season 3 (18 Episodes, 15 fillers)
Oh boy, here we go. So we get into the first real fillers of Shippuden.
The psuedo-jinchuuriki, Sora. A total of 15 episodes makes up this filler arc with only 3 of the first episodes being an actual contribution to the real story
Season 4 (17 Episodes, 0 fillers)
Back on track again with a solid 17 episodes with honest to goodness, continuity in the story and also a memorable hallmark in the series is contained in this season. Chaos wrought by the
undead duo of Hidan and Kakuzu. A relieving zero amount of fillers, makes this season a worthy contribution overall.
Season 5 (24 Episodes, 23 fillers)
Another filler arc, with only the very first episode wrapping up last season. At this point it's starting to get annoying that they delay the story and fill
in the blank weeks with semi-entertaining fillers.
Season 6 (31 Episodes, 0 fillers)
What a legendary season. So many good memorable moments in this one, and absolutely zero fillers. Lots of flashback episodes though, but all canonical to the
manga, they make a worthy contribution. The show is still on good tracks and most certainly redeemed last season.
Season 7 (8 Episodes, 8 fillers)
A strangely short season (yes I looked it up, it is considered a full season) with a small filler arc spanning over 8 episodes, I skipped this on purpose myself
so no comment from me on this one.
Season 8 (24 Episodes, 2 fillers)
Another one of the greats. This season brings the conclusion to a long awaited mysterious foe we came to know as "Pain" and a fan favorite among many is packed in here
as well between our hero, Naruto and a certain someone.
Only a mere 2 episodes out of the 24 are fillers, so easily forgiven.
Season 9 (21 Episodes, 17 fillers)
After the last season, we get another rather long break from the actual story of Shippuden and are given a bunch of fillers, with only a few episodes depicting the actual canonical events of the manga mixed in. We mostly get non-seamlessly connected fillers that all stand on their own..
Definitely worth skipping the fillers, as usual.
Episode 177-178, 183-186, 189-196
Season 10 (25 Episodes, 0 fillers)
By now a pattern has begun to emerge, it seems that every other season is pretty much filler. This is definitely another great action packed season, where we
finally get to see Naruto meet Sasuke after a long break from this plotline.
It is arguably an introduction to the next great war, but yet it has some very epic moments in there.
Season 11 (21 Episodes, 18 fillers)
You guessed it, yet another filler arc delivering light weight episodes with little value to them, but makes a bit of a comeback to some more popular side characters
however, fillers are still fillers, and this season is no exception to that rule. A little bit of an arc, and some random story fillers in there, so a bit of a mix.
Season 12 (33 Episodes, 5 fillers)
Biggest season since Season 1 in terms of sheer numbers of episodes, alas we have to deal with at least a couple of fillers, in this case there are 5.
This is also the beginning of the great war, and thus we have many episodes that winds up feeling like fillers, because they depict characters we have no knowledge of beforehand, but
still manage to play an overall part in the overlapping storyline of this war. I have chosen to not consider most of these episodes, fillers, in spite of maybe not being a full chapter in the manga.
There are however 5 pure filler episodes in this episodes that I have listed simply due to their nature of depicting past rather insignificant events from a different perspective, thus not serving any real purpose in the overall storyline.
Episode 257-260 and 271
Season 13 (14 Episodes, fillers ??/11)
Some of these episodes aren't canonical, but involves development for a few characters, so I'll count them as fillers, but still avoid putting down the hammer
as in they ARE fillers. I'll leave it for you to decide. Some fillers in this season however are some of the worst yet, mainly two of them, that I won't go into
Season 14 (6 Episodes, fillers 6)
Exclusively a filler arc season, and a short one fortunately.
The continuity on this one is all messed up in my opinion, but I guess some people will like it. It might be worth checking out.
Season 15 (25 Episodes, fillers 15)
By far, one of the worst seasons in the show in my opinion. It contains the infamously hated "Yota" whom in case you don't remember, is the boy that controls
the weather through his emotions. We also get to see the filler arc of the sound 4 being revived, fighting the leaf ninja they almost defeated so many years ago.
On the flipside however, there are some epic moments of the Kage fighting former leaders of their villages. A very bitter mix of excellent and absolutely horrible in this season.
Episode 299, 303-312
Season 16 (16 Episodes, fillers 2)
Fortunately a great season followed up after the last one, with Naruto finally clashing against Tobi and his version of the six paths of pain rinnegan jutsu,
using former jinchuuriki as conduits. With the exception of two ridiculously drawn out flashback episodes, this is pretty much a pure canonical driven season.
Episode 327-328 <-- these are a little open to intepretation, but they are very dragged out.
Season 17 (??/ongoing 68 and counting may actually have yet to be divided into season, otherwise this is by far the biggest one yet by twice the amount and still going! fillers so far 15 AND counting)
This is by far the most obscure season in the entire show. More than half of it so far has been all flashbacks which I very kindly decided not to count as filler, 1 third seems to be all filler and the final
bunch of episodes are canonical. I really don't know what to make of this season myself, yet... I think it has way too much going on without actually progressing much, and the filler arc of the chuunin exam is not helping either.
Episode 376-377, 389-390, 394-404 (ongoing filler arc)
Episodes - 403
Out of those 403 episodes, these are fillers
Fillers - 137
Which gives us a total of 266 canonical episodes
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Tell me about it. Atleast it is a good warning to people who have not seen Naruto. The recent fillers are terrible. The one line i really hate in naruto now is "Ever since that time......"
Are any of season 17 fillers and worth watching? does it have any interesting backstorys such as the filler with kakashi ?
