I like NGNL better than SAO, though both were enjoyable to watch. I would love for them to make more NGNL, but I'm worried that it might just stay as manga bait. I also adore Log Horizon, which is another stuck-in-a-game anime, though it has a much different feel and direction from SAO.

Thank god I wasn't forced to choose between the two... Still, shocking that someone hadn't intentionally watched NGNL, easily in my Top 3 favorites, along with SAO... and Log Horizon... There might be a slight trend there...

I don't think I could really choose. I like both of them for very different reasons.
I would have no issue re-watching either of them and I have lol

NGNL is nothing more than low brow pandering self serving garbage. It is a masturbatory fantasy that caters to losers and the such because they're easily exploitable. What really pisses me off is how characters like Shiro and Stephanie Dola get used and or abused by the male protagonist Sora or the story in order to fulfill the purpose of "Hey guys, look what are badass protaganist is doing!" My least favorite trope is when females get one upped, disrespected, or otherwise diminished in their role by their male counterparts or the story, which NGNL accomplishes pretty well with its female cast. Shiro could easily be replaced with a cardboard cutout half a time, and serves nothing more than a fantasy little sister for the losers to fap their hand too, or a deus ex machina machine with her MAD SKILLZ, and she is easily the most "significant" female character. Yet she feels more like a side character if anything. Steph is a butt monkey and Ms.Fanservice, alongside Jibril. None of these females have anything to contribute to the story that doesn't concern their personality. There is little room for personality. It's all trash dedicated to making the viewer/Sora feel good about themselves.

You literally could have reduced this entire paragraph into one sentence. "I am a feminist".

I haven't seen No Game No Life, but I only liked about half of SAO, though the arcs I did like were good enough to keep me watching through all the stuff I had to force myself to sit through.

The time that sword art online was coming out is one of the greatest time periods of my life - the other 2 main ones being my early days of newgrounds and that brief period that I had a life. SAO may have been overrated but I lived it while it came out and it is one of my fondest memories as it was also the last days of runescape being great. I didn't get that with no game no life. Also SAO had an ending.

Nonetheless it is apples and oranges. They're both enjoyable for different reasons.

Sword Art Online was okay. The first cour was good, and then the rest of season 1 was pretty terrible. Season 2 was mediocre at best, and felt more like harem than anything else.

No Game No Life? I stayed up til 3am to finish it in one go. The plot was gripping, the art style mesmerizing. All in all, a very amazing show.
