Psycho Pass, Darker Than Black, Death Note!
I also recommend Kuroko no Basuke (it's a sports anime but it's awesome)

I love how everyone Skips DBZ. Anyhow i wouldn't recommend those for a first time viewer thats not into anime. While i can't say for her tastes i would stay away from the big shounens. Now if it was reversed situation i would say sure.

I skipped DBZ for a reason. Name at least ten anime viewers who hasn't watched at least one of them early on. Like I said before that's literally what they're for, to get people into anime.

I could easily name 10 viewers, while i don't know names offhand, anyone that started off watching anime pre 90s, including myself.

Shounen Jump is primarily target towards teenage boys, not a stepping stone into anime culture. Just because people grew up with the big shounen doesn't mean that everyone will like it. While I'm not going to argue over this, i will say this its ultimately his choice not ours.

Those are more for introducing kids and people who like fighting/adventure shows to anime, not the typically adult female demographic that likes police procedurals. It would be better to go find a shoujo or a josei to introduce them to anime than a typical shounen.

Does Fruits Basket or Ouran High have any ecchi-ness? I know some of my female friends who aren't much into shounen like those two.
Though all I know about them is that they are not to my tastes at all.

Fruits Basket doesn't from what I remember. Never watched Ouran High so don't know on that one.

Some people are put off by the art style but early on I really liked this show. Apart from Yuuko's sexy dresses pretty tame stuff by anime standards. I would give xxxHolic a try You can find all of it on youtube most likely it is still on hulu and maybe netflix.
Here is episode 1 from youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ty9Ft40wNxg

- Hyouka is a school-aged mystery series with basically no fan service.

- None of the Visual Arts/Key anime have any fan service to speak of: Clannad, Kanon (2006), Little Busters, Angel Beats. All are very good.

- Usagi Drop, I've found, is an awesome introduction anime to people who associate anime with porn. Heart-warming drama about family. Again, zero fan service.

- If she likes Westerns, you could try Trigun. If she likes low-fantasy, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. If she likes cyber-punk head-trips, Serial Experiments Lain. If she likes off-beat comedies about eccentrics, try The Eccentric Family. If she likes science fiction and doesn't mind the robot thing, try Eureka Seven.

Personally, I was in the same boat with my wife: she associated anime with only porn. For her, because she likes romance stories, I started her on Myself; Yourself (some fan service, but not a ton) and ef: Tale of Memories (a little fan service), and then moved on to Clannad, Toradora, Usagi Drop, Aishiteruze Baby, and the Tokyo Godfathers movie. I'm currently watching Eureka Seven with her, and she really likes it.

So, my wife freaking hates anime beyond belief. (Took me a very long time just to convince her it was not just porn.) Anyways, am here asking for a good starter anime, for someone that probably isint interested in it.

Few tv shows I know she likes it like, drama, mystery type stuff? Those, criminal shows, whatever genre they would be, like Criminal Minds and the sort. Oh, also comedy.

But yeah, the anime can not really have ANY ecchi, like at all. This is going to be a long hard journey, but hopefully by the end, can get her to enjoy anime. Thank you guys.

most of the suggestion so far has mainstream stuff that normal anime viewers tend to like and usually contain a major inuendo sense that structure the series.

a few good suggestions are natsume which is really lax and poetic in a sense.

case closed is a classic, and it has a good amount of episodes in english that will draw in people who love the mystery genre, but its long and after a while there no more english dubs.

kawaii manor is simply purehearted romance, but it does poke fun at typical sexual things, but its easy to get past that because of how purehearted the series really is.

for the more dramatic, blast of tempest is an awesome show, again they will poke fun at sexual things, its more playful and not that bad. but from your description i feel like this is the go to for what most anime represent without going knee deep into hard core ideas that represents anime such as epicness of things like superpowers. this series is just great.

for more story like series, that has folktale storytelling styles beast playing erin and moribito are an amazing series there no sexuality at all, its straightforward and amazing.

for a comedy show, i think gintama is the king in obscurities. but it may be to random. but most episode will either be super epic if its in a major arc, or it will be total troll and hilarious.

if your wife likes a good cry. shows such as tegami bachi and kanon will make her cry. but the thing is that its super cheesy.

and then you have mainsteam shows suchs as bleach, naruto, sword art online, attack on titans and such and then the current meta shows such as parasyte and tokyo ghoul.

For comedy, Tonari No Seki-kun, Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun and Chronicles of the Going Home Club I believe are safe (anyone please chime in if my memory is off on any of these). Barakamon is solid gold too. Pure family comedy in a good way.

For mystery, I second the suggestions of Hyouka and Case Closed but also would add The Young Kindaichi Case Files Returns and it's predecessor series. It's done like the old-school murder mysteries with the gathering of the suspects and big reveal at the end. Another title that may fit if your wife likes procedurals may also be Terror in Resonance. It's a conspiracy theory sort of show and I don't recall any particular ecchi moments at all in the series. Ghost hunt also fits the bill, it's more mystery than horror despite the title name and is about a group of young parapsychologists out to debunk horror stories.
