So I was thinking after watching some Saekano today that Izumi Hashima solely existed as a character just to cause a conflict between Eriririririririririririri and Morals-kun.

So who what are some characters that are only there to be a plot device?

That is a good point, honestly I can think of a lot of shows that the definition of plot device could be applied to either fully or lightly. I would think that Raditz would be a plot device.

Just because he shows up and literally moves the plot dragon ball onward.

Definitely Mayuri from Steins;Gate.
And of course, a certain blonde goofball.

If we're gonna talk about walking plot devices and we're going to mention Your Lie in April, we have to mention Nao Kashiwagi

Literally, a walking plot device that only got moved into the main cast's company to push Tsubaki

99% of all anime chars.

Very few anime are character driven, and even when the focus is on the characters its usually to have them drive the sales of character goods.

You and I clearly watch very different anime lol, because I'm having a hard time thinking of characters that are basically just plot devices(most of the anime I watch, are very Story/Char driven).

To Topic: The obvious one that comes to mind though, is Sakura in Naruto(she's not even a good plot device, damn I hate her, she's such a bad, useless, and annoying char. Why would we want the MC to pine over her sigh)

Guin, in Guin Saga, yes the MC in this anime is nothing but a plot device(the other characters are far better developed, and actually have a identity, pun unintended), and a meh one at that. He's your typical, I lost my memory, and trying to find myself plot device.

The parrot in The Mysterious cities of Gold. It's a really pointless plot devise, having a talking pet warn you of trouble or try to get you out of such. It was a weird fad in older adventure series(both in western, and in anime). It was to the point, like there was some unwritten rule, that you had to have a flying talking pet of some kind, in a animated adventure series

I don't know, I really do not believe that Okabe Rintarou is a plot device...he drives the show quite a bit, doesn't he? As well as Vash the Stampede, and both Monster and Welcome to the N.H.K. seem more character than plot driven...just my thought though.

As for actual plot-device characters (in my mind at least), most certainly the girls (except for a select few) from The World God Only Knows

Do the south birds in One Piece count? They're such plot devices they have actually been named to reflect that. Their beaks point south. That's it. Oh, and since we're talking about DBZ I suppose the Saibamen count as well. They existed for no other purpose than to buy time, and that's both in and out of universe.

I'm not saying there aren't chars with decent characterization, but that there are only a select few who transcend their narrative. That is because there is so few anime which can even approach the level of being innovative and having even basic competence, much less being art.
