Back when I saw this thread I had no idea who John Oliver was, but now I can't get enough. I love his show and am trying to currently watch all his videos on YouTube. I find him hilarious and I have learned more from him than any actual news source.

Excellent. Another has joined us.

Yea, I agree though. I have learned quite a bit from his show. Most of it rather annoying and disturbing but still things that I wish I had known about sooner.

Its not really that much like the Daily Show to be honest. The Daily Show is a review of daily news events. John Oliver on the other hand only does one show a week and its investigative comedy(?). They have all week to really dig into a topic and the results are really informative. Its a very effective format because he's often talking about subjects you would never, ever be able to sit through a regular news cast of. Your eyes would glaze over. But when you mix it with a little humour and appropriate disbelief/outrage at the shit going on it becomes engaging as well as educating.

I love John Oliver, didn't like his last stand up though. I'm all for pointing out Aerica's flaws, but he just spent an hour making fun of her.

If you're referring specifically to Last Week Tonight, I quite enjoy the show but essentially treat it as a Wikipedia article. That is, it's a grand starting point with much intrigue and entertainment value, but serves as a poor stopping point if one's objective is to understand an issue.
