Universal translator. Small, easy to carry. Even able to have it installed into your brain with no real risk, and it automatically translates any language you hear or read into something you can comprehend. Wouldn't that be pretty dope? Would you want one?

I would. Just work as a translator.

I probably wouldn't like it as much as actually leaning and understanding the languages. I'd get a chip to download all linguistic knowledge directly into my brain. That way, you don't lose stuff in the translation and the languages are more meaningful.

I'd still get this, though, if it is free and there's no risk.

I think I would want one, but for it to do more. I don't want knowledge of everything, but to have it install in my brain would be abnormal with technology advancing in such a way as I always hear the phrase 'Robots will take over the Earth". I would try it for a good cause if I need like I've seen a video where this little boy never heard anything. He was born deaf. So, now that the technology advanced where surgeon put that device in his head to where he is able to hear was amazing to me. I believe it didn't last long or something happen, but its a giant step for improvement.

Would this also let me speak all languages? I would like a translator to help me get the gist of a conversation, but I want to learn how to communicate in those languages myself.

Easy, give the other person a universal translator.
Or I suppose you could use this: the Ultra-Complete Maximegalon Dictionary of Every Language Ever,
Hitchhiker's guide has some useful stuff.

I wonder what would be lost in translation when one considers how much of translation is achieved through inference, regionality, and perspective.

The universal translator would not let you speak a different language. You speak your native tongue, and the listener's UT will translate for them. They speak their native tongue and your UT will translate. Your "ears" will "hear" the translated conversation (you may notice their lips not moving in sync with the words, though). That's how UT works.

To learn a foreign language. You have to actually learn it, and UT does not help with that. Your "ears" never actually "hear" the foreign words being spoken, so it cannot help with learning a foreign tongue.

I instantly thought that I would just prefer to have a babel fish in my ear when reading the first post. Glad I'm not the only one to have it come to mind.

Also the bonus of it both proving and disproving God at the same time is a nice bonus.

Personally I like to be the dominant one in the relationship, and muscular women aren't appealing to me.

There's no such thing as no real risk. Heck even going out your front door every day comes with some risk. Risks are part of life you weigh up the pros and cons and take a gamble.
