No because of how much gets lost in translation; a universal translator can only do so much if one of the languages just does not have the structures to capture the nuances of the other. I'd rather just learn the languages.

I probably wouldn't like it as much as actually leaning and understanding the languages. I'd get a chip to download all linguistic knowledge directly into my brain. That way, you don't lose stuff in the translation and the languages are more meaningful.

I'd still get this, though, if it is free and there's no risk.

This.

Sure, why not?

How about a volume normalizer though too... (loudness equalizer) Or better yet noise cancellation that smartly dims out background conversations while I am working.

...yes, I would be fine with being able to speak and read absolutely every human language which has ever existed. Why would anyone say no?

Of course! This would be an amazing thing to have!

There are many languages I wish I could understand, but have no desire to learn. German, for example. It's not a language i'm interested in learning at all - but there's quite a bit of stuff I wish I could read and understand in German. A universal translator would be amazingly useful for that.

I wouldn't be so sure about that since OP said this in his post

it automatically translates any language you hear or read into something you can comprehend.

This to me indicate that it would just be able to translate once, not twice... So in other words you'd be able to understand what someone said, but they wouldn't be able to understand what you said if you used the device.

I still don't see a downside even if you ultimately still have to learn how to communicate back. You'll know whatever is being said or written.
