You do realize that the manga had a seven year hiatus, right? That isn't counting the multiple smaller breaks that have also happened.

With a gap of that size, the series was pretty much begging to get a reboot, with crisper animation and less filler.

I wouldn't have ever watched it otherwise, so the reboot was good.

Well they stopped at the end of the Greed Island Arc with the original Hunter x Hunter. But that was after a 60 something episode series filled with fillers and like 3 OVA series.

If they just adapted the Chimaera Ant Arc onward, that would be extremely jarring and alienate everyone who didn't watch the original anime which aired almost 10 years before the 2011 adaptation. It would have been pretty disastrous.

So basically the only choices were to either remake the entire thing, or not do it at all.

I do like the art style of the original better, it was darker and had more atmosphere. The new art style feels more childish. The story is a prefect adaptation either way.

I don't know but I'm sure glad they did. The old anime looks pretty dated. Unlike shows such as DBZ though, the animation just looks plain ugly in the first Hunter x Hunter series.

Okay, where do I start.

The 1999 version was good but it was hard to follow. The amount of censorship was legendary. It also had a fair amount of filler. Since nearly 10 years had passed since the last adaptation it made sense to start fresh.

Usually, remakes happen as a means to produce an adaptation that's more faithful to the manga. When the original series is loaded with fillers, that's just a way to get viewers to read the manga. The remake follows the manga more closely. That's sort of what the situation is with FMA and Brotherhood where the original is faithful to the manga up until halfway through where the second half was all anime-only stuff, while Brotherhood is faithful to the manga all the way through to the end.

Because why not? I haven't seen the 1999 one but the 2011 one is one of my favourite anime of all time.
