For some reason, I'm a big fan of music boxes. My aunt has a collection of nice Italian and Japanese boxes, which I used fairly often whenever I was reading as a kid in mid-elementary school. I'd take a box from her room and wind it up and read my borrowed library books.

I always liked the sad-sounding ones. It is as though time stops when there's a music box playing. There's a special, timeless quality about the sound of the music box that always calms me down. I'm not home very much nowadays but I'll still use one of my aunt's music boxes when I go home.

I intended to begin collecting them but since I already collect other expensive things, I only have one music box. It was a Japanese one made in the 30s which wasn't thought about very much, I guess, since the previous owners did not take care of it. I got to listen to the tune on that box a few times before the mechanism became completely broken. A real shame, since I really liked that tune. The box itself is elegantly lacquered with a floral pettern, but the mechanism is now rusted and broken.

I got that music box when the grandparents of one of my acquaintances died. He was about to throw away all their things but the music box caught my eye. I asked him if I could keep it since I couldn't bear to watch it being tossed into the trash and he agreed. It looks like a little lacquered traditional Japanese dresser. There's also a mirror on the top that flips out. I use it to store little trinkets, like my carved stamp seals, obsidian blades, and rings. Even though I can't listen to it, I kept it.

Does anybody else enjoy the sound of a music box? For me, the sadder the tune, the more I like it.

I'm not sure why but I find their sound haunting and mesmerising but in creepy rather than pleasant way. I have dim memories of watching a horror movie when I was about 8 whose plot centred around you playing a music box then slowly going mad. Was some sort of lovecraftian summoning thing very odd either way it seems to have stuck.

By themselves not really so much, but then again I haven't had the chance to listen to one in person with no other noise around.

I do like them within certain types of music.

I also enjoy the pretty, yet sad sounding tunes of music boxes. I had a lot of them growing up, as well as some snow globes that also played music. I still enjoy hearing music box versions of some songs.

Yeah, that's why I was scared to listen to music boxes at night when I was young. I still remember a time when the first music box I ever had (made of shaped copper, with a little windmill that turns when the music plays) began getting jammed with dust and rust. I brought it with me from Taiwan when I moved here. By then, it was already at least a decade old and neglected by my family and pretty damaged by the oppressive humidity in Taiwan. I think I still have that box somewhere but I do remember not really seeing its value until later on. I hope nobody threw it away. I'm going to look for it when I go home next time...

Anyway, the box was winded but jammed. I went down into the kitchen late at night to get a drink and the music box suddenly unjammed and began playing its haunting tune. I ran upstairs as fast as I could.

Sometimes it's fun to have multiple playing at once...it's a chaotic sound...

In answer: Yes, music boxes are wonderful! Especially the creepier sounding ones! (Though, I personally do not own any...)

I like the sound of music boxes in music as well, but there's so much depth to the sounds made by a music box that you listen to in person. Recording often fails to capture it.

The best way to listen to one is to sit in a quiet area with a wooden floor on a summer morning or afternoon. In a room that is not too large. Close the door, sit on a comfortable couch or sofa, and wind it up.

I have one from my sister, think its a geisha going round.

My hearing cannot tolerate the sound.

Music boxes are really cool, and it's sad their popularity has died out so much. They're kind of hard to come by now.

One of my favorite things to do as a small child was wind up a piano-shaped music box at my grandmother's house and listen to the little tune. I could listen to it for hours, and watch how it functioned through a see-through glass part in the top.

Yeah, it's fairly hard to find them unless you happen upon a quaint little store that sells them.

Here in San Francisco, there's a shop that sells them, along with some luxury botique goods. I could never for the life of me remember its name. They periodically get new ones and I'll go inside to look at the boxes sometimes. They have mostly Italian music boxes. Too bad they are so expensive. $150-$600 seems to be their range.

I like watching them too. I used to take the mechanism out of one I had and watch the little combs slide across the spikes. It would be cool to know how to make those.

I've always loved music boxes. They're so soothing, and they help me mellow out. I also feel the same way about sadder tunes, the sadder it is the more I'll like it. I remember the first time I heard Lilium in Elfen Lied, I instantly fell in love with it. If only I had a music box that played that melody.

Love them. Wish I had one.
