Was probably suicide. Unless the train was going very, very slow they should've felt the tremors and moved.

Can't predict when a freight train gonna pass by.

We have a light rail system here and i think at least once a year someone gets hit or dies from not paying attention. Usually when you have your headphones on or messing with your phone you tend to be less aware of your surroundings.

There's a show called your bleeped up brain, and it basically goes into how it's easily tricked by optical illusions and magic tricks. They did a test at a large college campus with a i think a clown on a unicycle juggling and then later revised the people that were using their phones and they said 9/10 times or something they didn't notice anything due to too involved with their phones.

With noise canceling headphones its even easier to ignore your surroundings.

They run an ad around here, now and then about this kind of stuff....

But it happens here now and then... http://www.oregonlive.com/washingtoncounty/index.ssf/2010/02/syney_meryl_coleman_was_wearin.html

A happier ending...

I remember living in Seattle and kids would get run over by a train usually down by Golden Gardens park and usually they were drunk when it happened.

Trains are big and don't stop worth a crap so stay the hell away from them.

Unless the kid was blind, it was probably suicide. I mean, trains are big and noisy, you can literally feel sound waves from the horn.

Also, what kind of headphones was he wearing so I don't buy a slightly used pair

Here in the bay area, service has been delayed considerably at least 7 times that I know of due to people getting on the rails ever since I moved here. Since there is a considerable and noticeable drop to get onto the rails themselves, and this is the same at all the stations, people are aware of this gap and do not usually fall in on accident, although it has happened many times. Most of the people who got on the rails and ended up getting hit were suicidal. All 7 died. This is more of a subway setting so I suspect people are a bit more careful than on rails outside.

I'm sure there are more than just 7 during these last 5 months I've been here, but when it happens, I NOTICE. Because I'm usually trying to get to or back from school. When we get a jumper, the delays can last up to 4 or 5 hours.

I also read about 2 instances last year where someone would intentionally bump another person into the path of an approaching train. I'm always looking around and standing further back than the recommended yellow zone when a train is approaching. I'm less likely to be bumped off this way and I can see if someone is looking at me strangely. The extra distance lets me see if there's someone in danger, too. I also have a habit of bracing myself and preparing to react to a shove that sends me toward the tracks. Might just be paranoia, but you never know.

I do feel bad for the jumpers but I am also always annoyed. Everyone in the area knows about the sheer amount of traffic and how much everyone relies on the train system to get to and back from work. If I wanted to kill myself, I'd certainly pick a less messy, less inconsiderate way.

The irony if he was listening to the "Dumb Ways to Die" song.. because "Be Safe Around Trains" is kinda the main message... It's really sad that he was an only child and i feel so bad for the parents. But it's like OP said, it's hard to feel sad for the kid when you're so angry at how incredibly stupid he must have been for something like this to have happened. Like... wut. Don't listen to your music so damn loud you can't hear a train! If you wanna listen to it that loud avoid train tracks and roads. gawsh

Even while wearing your headphones, at least you can see things around you. Anyway, that's just tragic the way things came down to that. You gotta be aware of your surroundings when you put the headphones on.

Ban headphones they cause death guys. (Sarcasm)

But in all seriousness it is very unfortunate that she was fatally struck by that train... I feel bad for the kid's family regardless if she was paying attention or not...
