it's time to get ready for the Miss. Universe competition.

Japan has picked their Miss. Universe. She's half Japanese half African American. Her name is Ariana Miyamoto. her mother is japanese and her father is african american. She hasn't spent her life in japan completely. she went to high school in the US, but a lot of japanese students come to america to attent high school and college. Ariana returned to japan to be a model.

the controversy in japan is she is representing the country, but she doesn't look japanese. to some people in japan it doesn't matter.

I saw her picture. she doesn't look japanese and she doesn't look black. she has more of a south pacific asian type look. When I saw her picture she made me think of an anime character in flesh and blood.

I personally think it is hypocritical of japanese people to complain about her not looking japanese because in japanese anime and manga, which is drawn by japanese people, all the characters are white people. They have no japanese eyes nor features nor hair. the only thing japanese about them is their names.

in japan women use a lot of bleaching cream so their skin will be milky white instead of naturally light tan, and both women and men have surgery to make their eyes wider and bigger, just like Ariana Miyamoto's eyes. Actually from what I know of japanese popular culture they are giving the impression that natural japanese appearance is unattractive and the european look is appealing.

This is a mental problem that most non white people have. they don't think their natural ethnic features, shin color, and hair is beautiful. It seems like some one has set the standard for beauty and demands everyone to make up themselves to take on the look.

back to japan. i think it is good to have pride in your ethnic make up. but don't be an hypocrite about it. use manga and anime to promote the acceptance of you ethnic make up. demand anime and manga characters to actually look like real japanese. That is why I watch asian drama. I want to see actual asian people playing roles (of course I watch anime and read manga too. but at times its good to see real people)

the same goes for all non white people in the world. look the way God made us to look. we are beautiful. Don't be ashamed our natural, asian, black, latino, and dark east indian features, hair, and skin color. show it to the world.

all things said. I think a very japanese looking woman with natural japanese features should have been picked. and she should have gotten her whole education in japan.

Tell me what you think. click on the link below see the new Miss. Universe Japan.

If Japan nominated her then go for it. I would have nominated someone who actually looks Japanese though.

If she has the heritage and ancestry then they have zero arguments. Does she have Japanese citizenship ? Because if she has then whatever argument they thou they have when to zero and beyond. Unless this a purity test it should't matter has long you have the heritage and ancestry or the citizenship. Otherwise is just racial profiling.

She's pretty damn beautiful, so who cares?

Pretty for a black hybrid, not really my type.

5/10.

Pretty sure it would benefited the thread if she said she was 1/2 African American. Just saying. I came in here wondering "what the heck is the other half".

It's pretty clear that Ms. Miyamoto has plenty of Japanese backers, considering she got the title of Miss Japan. No one gets pageant titles, especially when chosen to represent a country, by being disliked across the board. For heaven's sake, though, don't crucify the Japanese people as a whole over a little controversy, much less, for character designs. On another note, it's incorrect to say that all anime and manga characters are "white people," and whatnot. I shouldn't need to clarify my statement, given the existence of characters like Black Lagoon's Dutch.

I raise an eyebrow over you having had a tangent over some Japanese people's belief of Miyamoto not being "Japanese enough," only for you to later say;
"I think a very japanese looking woman with natural japanese features should have been picked. and she should have gotten her whole education in japan."
Is it wrong to judge Miyamoto over her looks and backround, or not?

I don't want to touch much on your comment over most non-white supposedly being insecure, but it really sounds like you pulled that out of your ass as an assumption (pun intended).

Someone will probably come along and cover my points and more with better eloquence, so whatever...

Dark skinned characters in my experience are far and few, especially as mains, such as Michiko and Hatchin.

Essentially this just seems like racism. She is Japanese so there isn't any reason why she shouldn't be their entry. Even being raised in the US for a while doesn't mean much as we probably wouldn't be having this conversation if she wasn't mixed race.

I agree. My goal was to point out how silly the "always white characters" claim is, I already had Dutch on my mind, and I felt that acknowledging this particular badass is an amusing way to debunk.

We barely see it. Yoruichi of Bleach, on the other hand...
Back on topic, always white is more or less an exaggeration. Doesn't mean it has no truth value, because a majority of anime feature white skinned characters or characters who look white.

I know what you mean, and there's definitely some truth to it. I'm afraid that I don't have much patience for exaggerations, though, so I get snippy. The OP put me in a bit of a funk, too.

Two ways to go about it.

It's her life, if they choose her- good for them.
If they don't, who can blame em'?
