as an African american myself i don't see what the big deal is. she's from japan and got nominated so whats the problem? of course there are going to be people against because hell, they're humans. she won so there really should be no problem.....
but I know all to well what that problem is....

Care if I spell it out? They don't find her attractive due to her dark skin. Because she's not a typical Japanese beauty. I can somewhat sympathize with them. After all, how can we control what we find attractive? It's not my fault many black looking women fall under my radar of what is considered attractive, it just is. Neither can they. No excuse to be so virulent, but I can understand.

It's pretty clear that Ms. Miyamoto has plenty of Japanese backers, considering she got the title of Miss Japan. No one gets pageant titles, especially when chosen to represent a country, by being disliked across the board. For heaven's sake, though, don't crucify the Japanese people as a whole over a little controversy, much less, for character designs. On another note, it's incorrect to say that all anime and manga characters are "white people," and whatnot. I shouldn't need to clarify my statement, given the existence of characters like Black Lagoon's Dutch.

I raise an eyebrow over you having had a tangent over some Japanese people's belief of Miyamoto not being "Japanese enough," only for you to later say;
"I think a very japanese looking woman with natural japanese features should have been picked. and she should have gotten her whole education in japan."
Is it wrong to judge Miyamoto over her looks and backround, or not?

I don't want to touch much on your comment over most non-white supposedly being insecure, but it really sounds like you pulled that out of your ass as an assumption (pun intended).

Someone will probably come along and cover my points and more with better eloquence, so whatever...

Dark skinned characters in my experience are far and few, especially as mains, such as Michiko and Hatchin.

Nadia was controversial in its day because the titular main character is black.

As for "white" anime characters -- to Japanese, they are Japanese. I used to have a link that explains how that works, but I can't find it right now. I'm sure someone else will find one though.

...I cannot believe I just read that.
Citizenship of a country should have nothing to do with skin color, ethnicity, or anything of the sort.
If she got through whatever she had to get through to get to whatever, then good for her.
A comment on the order of "she doesn't look japanese so she can't represent japan" is strictly racist.
She can look however she feels like, and shouldn't need to put up with that crap.
And that goes for everybody.

So, what would the offended bunch say to this young lady?

"No, you can't be Miss Universe because your dad is black. Why is that so difficult to understand?"

I hate beauty competitions (seriously, true physical beauty should NOT involve a stitch of makeup, fancy clothes, made-up hair, special lighting, ANY plastic surgery, ANY modifications...) but she looks pretty in the pictures. Wonder how she looks without makeup etc. though?

And those commentating on racial issues...

Japan is not only an Asian country (which, like ANY Asian country even in modern society prefers as light skin as possible), but Japan is also one of the most, is not THE most xenophobic nation in the world. It is a massive, strange step for them to let this girl hold this title with all things considered and commentary against her winning should come as a surprise to no one.

I do feel immense pity for any mixed person (especially if they are mixed with Black) to live and be brought up in any Asian society. Asian society is simply brutal to those who are mixed and the darker you are, the more African your features are - the harder it is to fit in and be treated well.

Perhaps not always, but a high, high estimate of the time.

Pretty sure it would benefited the thread if she said she was 1/2 African American. Just saying. I came in here wondering "what the heck is the other half".

you're getting a lot more clever these days...

I don't find her very attractive either, but the only thing that matters is her citizenship.

Japan's always been a racist country though... they even hate the more caucasian looking Ainu who were more or less the original inhabitants of the island.

This sort of thing happens in ALL countries from and to ALL people...but in all honesty, Asian society makes it that much worse. Still the most racist place on earth. Ya'll don't know racism until you go to Asia. Trust me.
