I think I should stay off the forum tonight. It seems like a lot of setups for bad of color jokes that are sure to get myself or others banned..

anyway, it's back to either hunterxhunter or gintama for me..

Japanese people with more traditional beliefs like to keep their country's race as "pure" as possible. It's part of a national pride type-thing. They don't even like a lot of foreigners coming there to live for a long time. Ask any person living in Japan, especially an older individual, and most of the time they will say it's important to "preserve their culture" in this way.
It's hard for us Western cultures, especially the U.S., to understand this. We are a mixture of people from all kinds of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. It is kind of messed up in a way, but black, Latin, or Middle Eastern people, are not represented well in their media because of this. There are really not a lot of other races, especially people of African decent, living in Japan.
I think it comes from a kind of fear of foreigners. Other countries act a lot differently, especially America. Plus, the Japanese population has been dying out pretty fast. Maybe they feel like they need to preserve their features.

The girl is beautiful, and I do think she is a great person to represent Japan. She grew up there, speaks the language fluently, and loves the country. There are just those invisible barriers out there that perhaps some day more Japanese and other cultures can overcome.
She didn't just wake up one day and become Miss Japan. She did work her way there. The pageant industry is crazy.

Two character tape topic... and it was not only lock-worthy but ban-worthy.

Which two characters would you like to see taped together? Nah, too tame, not inherently offensive or sexual even...

Which two characters would you like to see a sex tape of? Well, maybe, but.. we've got the fetishes thread apparently..

If you could tape two characters... AGH.. I got nothin...

Well that's their problem if they don't like Ms. Miyamoto. Crap like this happens all the time, I'm sure. Snooping around in the comments I found interesting things like this:

Anyway, speaking of pageants, I don't care for them at all. I will say good for her and I hope she doesn't take the negative things to heart (too much).

Also, off-topic, but I saw that PeripheralVisionary got banned--which was going to happen eventually. It was only a light sentence, so I hope he learns to not post stupid shit anymore, but I doubt that. Ah, well...

The older Japanese generation doesn't like anyone that isn't Japanese in their country and I mean older generation as in "older",but the younger generation doesn't care for much. The younger generation like anything new. I forget the name of it,but there is half-Japanese and half-African citizen have their own culture. In my opinion, shes beautiful and since was voted fair in square, so she deserve to respect Japan. She's half of her mother, so she's Japanese to me.If I didn't know this and knowledge this, I wouldn't have known she was Japanese by looking at her. Besides, everyone has changed since their ancestries including us Americans. That being said by looking at Japanese history they've changed since their ancestries first arrived on that island thousands of years ago.

I am confused... the Japanese don't like her representing the country because she's mixed? Some how I find that very hard to believe. I am under the impression that people in japan like "atypical" mix/features. I think the only problem they have with her is that she's dark skin... Japanese, Korea, Hong Kong etc... are obsessed with light skin.

also I don't think anime characters with colourful hair and eyes are portrayal of "white people" I think it's an artistic, fun, and cute expression of a character. Usually if a character is suppose to be a specific race they are drawn obviously like that race i.e. "black" characters.

wonder if she would still have the backlash if she was half white and half japanese...

there's some sort of underlying racism (especially against darker skin toned person) in those Asian people... it's not even funny.

_____

the scientific truth is... NOBODY presently on this planet is "pure" anything. ya'll have a bit of something else in your goddamn genes. that's why some of us have the same traits even though we're different race.

Heeeeere we go again.

I can't help but facepalm every time I hear something about "Anime characters not looking Japanese".

1. The facial features do look Japanese, also the hair color. Usually Darker hair colors, females have large slightly slanted eyes, males have slanted. Characters are generally short stature.

2. There is no need to give them a Japanese skin color because they are implied being Japanese, unless said otherwise. It's similar to how we know Homer Simpson being white, despite having yellow skin.

I'm not sure if that's directed at me or the person I'm quoting. I disagree with the quote though.

Anime and manga should have nothing to do with this discussion, and Im not sure why the OP thought it necessary to even through that in there, other then to rant a little.

If Ms. Miyamoto was eligible to compete, then there shouldn't be so much of an uproar if she wins. She was born there, raised there, amd is Japanese. You have the nationalistic, traditional school of thought, clashing with the more progressive and inclusive school of thought. As rosebudpony mentioned, its a bit harder for most of us, that come from a generally multicultural society, to comprehend. Does she fit the traditional Japanese image? No. But she is definitely Japanese and deserves a chance to represent her country as she is smart, talented and beautiful. Which is more or less the 3 prerequisites for any Ms. (insert country here).

I think the judges in this contest were more from the progressive side of things, and its clear they want to enhance or change the status quo in Japan for the better, and to appear more inclusive on a global scale. If I'm not mistaken, (which I very well may be), they're facing some issues due to stagnant birth rates.

People who disapprove of her winning should just get over it and move on... or go back to their farms and turn off the tv. It wont affect them in the slightest anyway.

If Japanese anime characters really looked Asian, then they would look something along the lines of Mulan from Disney's Mulan or something.

Come now, don't kid yourself. If people did not know anime was from Japan (or even manga) they would think that the characters (vast majority of them) were white, based on the skin color, eye color, hair color, larger eyes, etc. There is nothing in their facial features 98% of the time that makes them look more Asian rather than white. They look like cartoony, exaggerated whites.

Again - they're cartoons, but because of the way they are drawn they look white far more often than not.

And really...characters for example, like Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon...look Japanese to you?

Oh yes. Without knowing anything of anime/manga, I would totally think that the above character is Asian, and more so Japanese. I think the blond hair and big blue eyes really scream Asian, don't you agree?

People on this thread need to stop bullshitting themselves, please.
