The Raw Challenge
Posted 3/25/15 , edited 3/25/15
Forewarning: If you look "raw challenge" on Google, it's all lame diets.

Subtitles - n. - the text of dialogue, speeches, operas, etc., translated into another language and projected on the lower part of the screen.

This isnt for eating raw food lol

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say most of us here do not speak enough of anime's native language to watch it without subtitles. I'm almost sure there's probably many among us who can, but I'm mostly sure it's more common than not we all rely solely on the subtitles to understand what's happening in the anime itself.

So I propose a challenge.

Watch a few minutes of your favorite anime, read your favorite manga, watch your favorite movie that has subtitles, listen to your favorite J-band, whatever it may be BUT with no subtitles.

I want everyone to see just how much of what is going on they understand, and in the case of the anime or movies, how much you understand by the images alone.

This is a challenge I'm sure a lot will say is a bit weird, but I think it can be fun. So why not just do it once so I shut up

While doing it, ask yourself these questions.

1. How much do I understand while watching/reading/listening?
2. What is going on/being said/happening?
3. Is it harder or easier to pay attention?
4. Without subtitles, what stands out more?
5. On a scale of 1 to 10, how much did you understand?

TL:DR Turn off subtitles, read manga raw, listen with no subs, and see how much you understand! This is the raw challenge!!

I thought this meant raw food. That would've been easy since half of my diet is raw.

Then, I read the OP's post....

I probably understood about 70% of what was going on after turning off the subtitles. I prefer to have them on, though.

Starting this challenge at a time when a lot of shows are entering their season finales? Having to watch it a second time just to read subtitles would take away some of the impact the episode had. You won't need subtitles to know a character that got their head chopped off is dead.

I wouldn't mind doing this with a random episode of an anime. In fact, I've done that before. But doing that with a season finale feels kinda cheap. I'll wait until the Spring season starts to do this if I'm interested enough.

Thank the gods this wasn't about raw foods. Alright I'll try it, sounds interesting cause I do notice that I get too entranced into the subtitles that I tend to forget about the background , the music, and the characters voices. I think I'll try with an anime I've watched multiple times and see how well I understand it...

I've never done a whole episode this way, but I've watched several minutes before. I prefer the subs on and I have not found that watching without them helps with.. well.. much of anything. >.>

And I listen to anime music all the time in the car. Pretty much every day. For years.

Been there, done that with Spirited Away when I first saw it. Same night, I watched some French paranormal-horror movie without subtitles, too. Earlier that day, I read some raw manga. Some of my favorite J songs lack subtitles, as well.

1. How much do I understand while watching/reading/listening?
Up to 70%, by utilizing context clues. It's much easier with anime, of course. To a lesser extent is manga/manhua, since comics lack sound. With music, I have no choice but to do little more than absorb sounds.
2. What is going on/being said/happening?
n/a
3. Is it harder or easier to pay attention?
Well, I pay more attention to the atmosphere and visuals, but, with anime and manga/manhua, my mind wanders more during dialogue. When it comes to music, though, it's like listening to orchestral music; almost all atmosphere, without trying to dissect the meanings of words. All in all, for me, it averages about the same as with subtitles, since there's give and take.
4. Without subtitles, what stands out more?
Visuals, atmosphere, and emotion. Everything except dialogue, really.
5. On a scale of 1 to 10, how much did you understand?
Up to 7, depending on the individual anime/manga. Anime, manga, and music that are a bit lacking in terms of atmosphere and whatnot can be really hard to follow.

I've done this before! I have watched enough anime to know the 'jist' of whats happening, but most of the time I don't, so I give up.
I am learning Japanese, though! So, it's only a matter of time before I understand xD

I actually tried this recently. I played through an episode without subtitles and thought 'Oh god, I'm so good. I nailed it!' after realising I'd misunderstood absolutely everything. I know as much Japanese as a weeaboo i.e. not much.

Used to do this for years don't speak a lick of Japaneses or Chinese which was what freaks folks out I have a nack for reading body language and visual cues. Was working in a Chinese restaurant no one could understand the old cook that was there, me I got along fine with him understood what he wanted me to do when he spoke just fine his son asked me at one point if I spoke Chinese I told him nope. Did a similar thing at a sci fi con that had an anime room and raw anime Project A-Ko if you remeber the robot scene where B-Ko tells A-ko to get on board so they can rescue C-ko together I nailed it spot on again everyone in the room asked me if I spoke it. I don't just a nack for reading the scene. We ad-libbed alot back then for those shows. The real trick is doing this with English speakers on the phone did tech support for years got really good at telling exactly what the person on the other end of the line was actually doing. People start to think you are watching them through the computer really freaks them out.

Read comprehension 0%
Watching about 60% to 80% really depends on the anime
Listening 0%

What stand out more without sub titles is the actions and how the characters are acting.

Easier to pay attention and more fun if you have some friends and are willing to MST3K it.

Depends on what is being said I do pick up on some Japanese words now.

My favorite anime K-On! I only understand what they are saying because I watched it so many times I memorized the subtitles. It doesn't mean I understand any of the Japanese they are speaking though.
