Do you feel like wearing other cultures' garments is a violation of their intimate customs?

Kimonos aren't some Japanese only tradition, its just what they wore back in the days. Now most choose to wear western style clothing over the Kimono due to its more functional and less of hassle to put on. Other cultures might have different views on their clothing depending on what it's used for but thats it. I know that Japan also offers yukatas when staying at a hot spring inn.

If anything its more of the customs that will get you in trouble more often than not. For example if you go to New Zealand and paint your face up like that of the Maori people, and you're not apart of that tribe or whatever, you're just asking for them to get pissed off at you. Now if you were going about it in an offensive way, I'm sure they would get mad at you and ask you to stop.

Personally I find seeing Westerners for example wearing kimonos kind of strange. To me it's like seeing a Chinese or Indian person walking around in a Viking outfit. I'm not trying to stop anyone from wearing whatever, just saying.

To be fair it'd be pretty strange if I saw ANYBODY walking around in a viking outfit these days, unless they are cosplaying. xD

It's the same concept as say a guy wearing women's clothing for the most part the reason why we find it so strange most of the time is because our brains don't usually see guys doing that. If it was more common place like say in Japan then maybe it wouldn't be so odd. But due to Kimonos almost never being worn outside of the Japan on a regular basis or brains don't recognize it.

I don't think it's disrespectful, as long as you aren't doing it mockingly. You can wear whatever you want and it's none of anyone else' business.

you should be fully aware of the symbolism of the garb and if it is meant to represent a certain group. For example clan tartan, it would be rude and disrespectful to wear the colors of a clan you have nothing to do with or colors that have nothing to do with you like the one for Irish heritage if you don't have Irish heritage.

Yeah wearing traditional clothing as long as its not out of mockery i guess should be ok. Its a subject close to my heart - im scottish, people who mock our traditional clothing like the Kilt offends me no end but if they respect our traditions then i would not be offended if they tried to embrace and dress as we do for fitting occasions. If anything you could say its actually flattering.

Wear whatever you want. If you look like an idiot in it, then that's your problem.

So who do I ask to wear white man's clothes? Because I'll be fucked if I'm going to wear a grass breechcloth with furs to the fuckin' market.

If someone wants to wear that, be my guest. I have a hard time listening to the self righteous blow-hards complain about "MY CULTURE" when they built a multi billion dollar casino, and then let our language die.
