Ooh, this reminds me of what we did once! My friends and I are to tally addicted to asian dramas, anime, manga etc. So we all had to give up every single thing for a whole month, which meant no asian TV, no dramas, no listening to asian music at ALL (even when someone was singing it, basically no karaoke X_X) and no manga, anime, or anything remotely asian (except for ourselves...and talking, of course). Some of my friends ended up doing the rest of the year (September - December). It wasn't actually that hard, if you have the self motivation :D.

And I have to agree. Harry Potter is not "Literature", JK Rowling just got lucky. IMHO LOTR isn't the "BEST" out there, but it is considered "Literature" =3. Just my two cents

Hmmm....I think people here need to check their dictionary or probably their English teacher? I'ts probably all right if you're in English I, still acceptable if you're in English II, but it isn't acceptable for a student who is in English III or IV (CP, Honors, or AP) not to know what Literature is. Literature is any body of writings of language; with subject, period, punctuations; and is printed. That includes, advertisements, catalogues, and etcetera.Thank You...

If you're saying that Harry Potter is not a form of Literature, you may be blind. If you don't call a 200 pages of writing as Literature, you don't know how to read. Don't tell me you're illiterate? Then, considering that's how it is, I may accept that you're as shallow as a river, for, you can read and write in English...

If you're just simply thinking that Harry Potter is plain idiocracy and Lord of the Rings has sense, then, that's your own opinion. Your privelege, your perspectives. However, if you will reply to me and argue that it isn't Literature, you may want to ask someone who's more knowledgeable than I am. It is okay for you to say that J.K. Rowling just got lucky, but, you want it or not, many recognize her talent in writing, that is probably greater than yours.

I am not depending anyone's side, I am just pointing out people's mistake. And no, I don't think I'm that smart, but, right at this point of this forum. I sure do know, I'm more knowledgeable than you are^^

Lol, I'm not English, I'm Chinese ^^. Probably explains it then :D. In our school, literature is defined as something more permanent than a fad. Books like Harry Potter and Twilight are called 'fads' while books like Diary of Anne Frank and LOTR lean more towards 'literature'. I'm not talking about precise definitions here because we use the term literature very loosely :D. How many people turn to examine every detail in a dictionary before using the word? I don't call Harry Potter literature, I call it a book that you read for leisure. Have you ever heard of people studying Harry Potter in school? No, they study Shakespeare (which our English teacher calls REAL literature).

I liked both books, but I have to say that LOTR has more of a root and is more of a historically famous novel while HP is more of a commercially famous book. In the end, its all really opinion. I said that it was in my opinion, so meh :D. Yes, JK Rowling probably has more writing skills than me but trust me, I've read a LOT of extremely underrated books which don't get nearly as much recognition as Harry Potter, but the authors have twice or three times the skill. I am still sticking with the fact that JK Rowling did get very lucky. It's like the music industry - there are extremely talented musicians out there who don't earn 2 cents, and then you have the lip syncing actress turned singer who earns millions. It's not always fair :D.

After all, it's only your opinion that HP is literature, isn't it? I'm sure there are many people (including our school's writing club teacher) who think that HP is slightly tacky and overrated ^^.

And FYI I just turned 14 and happen to still be at the stage where English is mandatory and a bludge. I don't take English extension or whatever mumbo-jumbo you were talking about and I don't plan to :D. I also don't happen to care if I'm 'dumber' than you are because all of this is just my honest opinion.

Oh, and you spelled 'privilege' wrong ^^.

Haha...Asians are so proud that they can speak English(I'm Asian, I mean Asians who are not born in ENglish speaking countries)...and now you're telling me you're not English?!...Then, I'll explain Asian English and American English have a slight difference, that same goes for British and Amerucan English...But one thing, They are Western English...You think you learn it but you actually don't...Then, if those people that you are talking about who don't turn to dictionary and just use the word, I shall say they're ignorace are worst than others...Like the word 'ghetto' or would you even know and use the word 'elicit' or 'callow' id you don't know what they mean...Don't you know that students can be far more intelligent than its own teacher? A fad is a fantasy, yes, Harry Potter is a fad, but you can't deny it is a form of Literature...

The world Literature, like what I said before, is any body of writing of language....but the word "literature" has different meanings depending on who is using it and in what context...so true, maybe you have your own different world of the meaning of the word "literature"

How about I put it like this....In Western Culture, the common literary types are poetry and prose, fiction, and non-fiction...A novel is a Literature, isn't Harry Potter a novel? Therefore, it is Literature...Youu think we use the word Literature loosely, but maybe if you are studying English here in Honors and AP classes, maybe you'll understand more...

I probably have read a lot of books than yours that is far better than J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter (I wouldn't have my mini library if I don't)....If you actually read a lot of those books, like what you said...There's something in Harry Potter that I don't think you do understand...Maybe Harry Potter is a bit overrated, I do believe in that...But, I've never seen a book before that is far more explained, with the enough amount of knowledge, and you can actually understand it easily...The thing about those underrated writers that you are talking about is that, they are deeper, they have far better knowledge than maybe J.K. Rowling herself...but for a simple minded readers, they can't understand it, kids and teens, and maybe adults find Harry Potter entertaining to read...You wouldn't actually want to read a complicated book rather than choosing a very exciting book, would you? Have you ever read Wuthering Heights? I'm sure you have, since you are saying yuo have read a lot of books, I don't think you could miss that book since you're a reader yourself....Not all people like Wuthering Heights, why? because it's hard to understand for some people...But if you actually understand it, for me it is better than Shakespear's Romeo and Juliet

And you can't say that Harry Potter is not historically related...It is either you didn't understand the book or you don't know your history....

Shakespeare's work, on the other hand, is indeed a Literature...a middle schooler's Literature...I love Shakespeare's plays and comedys, but he's not for a High Schooler...Not for a 14 year old, I shall say....

It isn't just my opinion, you want a debate with your school's writing club and my own writing club...you may not even win....Not when almost all my members are member of the International Writing Association...Our names are recognize...Yours is just a 2nd rate Writing Club...I'll probably be better than your own teacher...I'm bragging now....hmmm....^^

At the age of 14 I learn 4 languge fluently...A language is never a mandatory, especially when you are using it...

Oh...sorry, I miss that....Thank you for correcting though^^

I don't live in America or England. And I do not live in Asia either. And I was born in Asia. Make sense? I WAS AN IMMIGRANT. You sound like you think that I am some illiterate Chinese person who turns to the dictionary to search up every single word, which I am not. And please, correct your terrifying grammar and spelling. Are you sure that that you take English Honor AP classes or whatever they are? Yes, I do happen to know what 'elicit' and 'callow' mean. Callow means inexperienced and elicit means to get (eliciting information). Thank our English teacher for hammering in new words each lesson. I agree that books with a level of complexity are a more enjoyable read than one faced books, and it is a satisfying feeling to read something you didn't understand the first time over again and have it suddenly click in your mind. You said that HP had a lot of appeal because of its simplicity. I agree. It's a very well written, COMMERCIALISED book. It gathers a great audience, and that's why it's successful.

If your definition is such a solid definition of 'literature', then how come many other sources, or many other English specialists define it in so many different ways?

EG: Literature is written works of fiction and non-fiction in which compositional excellence and advancement in the art of writing are higher priorities than are considerations of profit or commercial appeal.

If I use this dictionary definition, then HP does not get classified as literature. In the end, these words with a wide range of acceptance can only be used when the user explains it.

Obviously you are a person who takes your literature very seriously. Take a chill pill and calm down, and remember these forums are probably filled with teenagers who are neither half as skilled as you, nor respect 'literature' as much as you. If you really believe so strongly in your views, take your comments to a writing forum please ^^. The first comment that I made was in response to the comments earlier in the thread about Harry Potter VS LOTR, and I never expected someone to reply with such an angry air (may I say, you also indirectly implied that I was 'dumber than you' and 'illiterate' >_>).

Sure, Shakespeare isn't for high schoolers. Maybe wait 6 more years until I can reach your almighty level of knowledge that nobody else could EVER POSSIBLY DARE to repute to discuss it with me. Maybe then I would care a bit more, and understand a bit more. Right now, I just want to watch some dramas on CR. Capice?

Take a chill pill, stop bragging, and respect that us people commenting with one sentence opinions about novels may be 'dumber' and 'less learned' than you are in these things ^^. I don't take reading extremely seriously, I just read for leisure, and many in these forums would agree with me.

I never said you are....Check my Grammar?!...ahaha....funny...hmmm....quite good...but there's more precise meaning for that...callow is immature and elicit is a driving force...well, still the same...ahaha....And there's no English Honors AP^^....Now, I don't know if you're just commenting me or did you hit the roof?....I was in English IV AP, yes...hmmm...

And I won't reply to you anymore...I don't know which of us are angry...I didn't say you're dumber than I am....I said, "...at this point of the forum. I sure do know that I'm more knowlegdeable than you are"....and I said, "Don't tell me you're illitirate?"...I didn't say you're dumber or illitirate...As far as my memory and understanding remember, I did not...

If I'm angry right now, there's probably a lot of mistakes in my spelling already because I'll be typing so fast...but I'm not....so, I am not mad....I'm the calmest and most serious person you'll ever see...well, that's what they said...For, I'm an introvert person...
Oh, there's probably a lot in CR who are far more intelligent than I am...I'm sure there are...

I just brag once....

And now, you are contradicting yourself^^

Well, since you're saying goodbye...bye still need to sub DBSK videos....

Lol. Yes I was angry when I posted that T_T. So very mad that I rambled on for 10 minutes to one of my friends on MSN who was in the writing club about this. She told me to get a life XD.

Shakespeare comment was pure sarcasm in case you didn't notice (well, the net is quite hard to express sarcasm over). I'm just wondering why Shakespeare is taught to high schoolers here if it isn't a "high school standard" subject, and too hard for us to understand.

Let's end this on a good note and just say we have different POVs ^^
