Good morning,

I was just hoping I could trouble you all for a little of your time. I recently had the idea to open a maid/butler café in Jacksonville, FL. (It will probably be more in Mandarin.) The responses to this thread will be only used as research. Before anyone asks or tries to "trample" this dream I have a degree in business administration with a minor in entrepreneurialship. I am currently doing learning everything I can about the food service industry which brings me to the reason and question for my thread.

If a non convention based maid/butler café opened in Jacksonville, FL would you frequent it?

no... since it's on the other side of the planet

In my honest opinion.. I think it's rather disturbing. I do not find the maid dresses cute at all, not even on the Asians. That's just me though, but if you actually do it, then you better find some pretty damn good maids willing to work.

I don't wanna be like the rest of these guys, but they have a point.

Only certain regions can be more open to that type of business, Japan has been known in being outrages at certain things (Which gives it credibility in all the current furry/maid/norm cafe) I honestly think all the good you can get out of it is small time money, but be wary about possible sexual harassment reports by your own employees. (Assuming you'd hire girls for sex-appeal. )

Hooters turns a profit just fine.

My guess is that a cosplay cafe would be better just for the range you could use.

It would have to be very modern, with good food, prices decent for the whole service, and good-looking maids/butlers. If you cant go all out for it, then dont do it. Thats the only way it will work. Since I live close enough to jacksonville, I would probably go sometime when Im near the area.

No. Florida doesn't interest me, and the genre does little to garner my attention. Also, my location means that, not only would it be inconvenient, but that I cannot financially sustain more than occasional patronage.

I've moved this to the Advice, Info, Recommendations forum where threads of this sort are more appropriate.

As to what I think, even if a maid/butler cafe opened up in my neighborhood (which is no where near Jacksonville, FL) I would not frequent it. I find the whole anime maid/butler obsession thing pretty eyerollingly silly, and the idea of real-life establishments which rely on such obsequious service is distasteful to me.

I'd frequent it if it were cutesy. Authorize no. I wouldn't be so brazen to wear a shirt that says "Hentai!", now would I?

I'm sure that the gimmick would be enough to generate some free publicity and perhaps a nice opening day.

But at the end of the day, a restaurant lives or dies by it's food, prices, service, and location. What the servers are wearing--whether it's skin-tight clothing (Hooters), going topless (as some Vegas restaurants have done), loaded firearms (as at least one diner in the American South has done), elaborate lingerie (as one small plates restaurant near where I live does) or maid outfits--might get someone to come in once. But after that, you have to be a good restaurant.

And that would determine whether or not I would visit, personally. I won't avoid a place because of maid outfits (unlike Hooters or the gun place I mentioned), but if the food sucks relative to the price, the service is bad, or the location is awful, I won't go there either.

1. You know how Hooters works right? You've seen the commercials right? Sex sells. Hire hot girls as generally maid outfits aren't big in the west. Now, hot girls in various cosplay outfits? You got yourself a deal (maybe). A straight up maid/butler cafe would probably be a failure IMO due to western culture seeing things differently. What I'd recommend is doing a cosplay cafe instead if you're that serious. Maids/butlers can be just one of the costumes.

2. Good food. Even decent or generic restaurants can turn a profit if people come back for the food. Try and be unique, have desserts that are unique or varied from what you'd find in say Starbucks while still having classic desserts.

3. Try and pick good real estate. People don't really want to drive for half an hour to go to just a cafe. Pick somewhere close to home like near a neighborhood or a popular shopping center.

4. Just my personal opinion, but aside from GOOD free wifi, there's not much else keeping you in a cafe. If you're really gonna have various employees in cosplay outfits serving customers, you'll need some people to populate the cafe. Try and have something to get people to stay as well, maybe like 3, give or take 1, computers just for general, free use. People without their own (or people without a decent one) will come and use them, and they might order something as well.

5. Again, this is INSANELY MY OPINION. I just don't think a cosplay/maid cafe will work well. If you REALLY want to run a business with cosplaying employees, opt for a restaurant instead. It'd make for a really unique/interesting atmosphere, just have good food.

I think it would be a great idea. I live in Jacksonville and I wish there was a maid cafe here. And if you need employees hit me up. I would love to work in a maid cafe.
