We really don't, actually. Its kind a given that racism isn't restricted to just one race. The problem with this sort of shit being sensationalized in the US news cycle is it serves the purposes of the racist majority ( white ). It gives them something else to point at and go "See!" to try and justify their own shittiness as human beings. It happens in literally every news story that can be remotely tied to racism. Even when its clear as farking day that white on anyone else racism was a factor the US media will bend itself backwards to try and explain it away.

Conversely, its doing the opposite when it gets even a whiff of black on white racism.

So has anyone pointed out yet that this started when the guy asked to use the victim's cell phone? You know, that little factoid most US media is burying 4 or 5 paragraph down after a click bait "GUY BEAT UP OVER MICHAEL BROWN QUESTION" headline to rile up angry/scared white Americans?

Its a bunch of drunk 20 something shit heads that were looking to start shit regardless and got rebuffed by the guy when asked to use his cellphone. Do you seriously think they were looking for feedback on a complex issue of systematic racism in America? I mean cripes, look at the still from the security camera. Those are not the expressions of people enraged or concerned by systematic racism. They're the expressions of young, drunk self important shit heads that think they're invincible.

If you've ever been on public transit after 6p on a weekend you've seen these guys countless times. In every colour.

So he first starts interacting with the man when he asks to use his cellphone. The man says 'no'. A lot of Americans wouldn't let strangers on a train just use their cellphone, regardless of race. A lot of Americans are cold, keep to themselves, don't trust others.

I don't think this is about the thing with the cellphone. If it was, why wouldn't he sucker punch the man right then and there? No, he then asks about the Michael Brown incident, while riding a train in St. Louis. A very controversial topic NATIONWIDE and they are in St. Louis. Then the man gives an answer that shouldn't be controversial and should be able to avoid confrontation, and then...the punk in the red shirt starts punching him.

This isn't about the cellphone. This is about racial tensions. The guy in the red shirt is prejudiced against whites. That is what it is.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like fodder being given to white racists in America. Any time they can find a black person at fault for something, they do then go "See!" like you said.

I'm just frustrated that they started beating that poor guy for no good reason at all. He asks him what he thinks about something very controversial, he gives an answer that is an attempt to avoid any sort of further confrontation, suddenly, he is being beaten.

Forget the thing said earlier about whether or not 'maybe' that guy and his buddies ever discussed doing this sort of thing...you are right, they probably didn't put much thought into what happened...but what I'm sure of is, if that guy asked about the Michael Brown incident at the spur of the moment, right then and there, I think he was itching to find a reason to start punching that poor guy. I think his intentions were to find any reason to reject just about any answer he could give and then attack the guy.

It is true that those young punks are a product of society where surely they have faced racism from whites many times and also face institutionalized racism. It is just disheartening to see this. Drunk or not, they only seem like those who will add onto the problem of racism in America, not help it and alleviate the situation.

Yeah, but in Missouri, the police, who are white, are definitely out to get people who can't defend themselves in court. They decide on a glance.

These kids went about it in a racist way, no argument. But they live in a former slave state where the police pick on them based on assumptions based on race.

If police misconduct makes it to the news, it's got to be some serious and tangible misconduct. The news is rarely bold enough to call out the police.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2014/08/15/the-day-ferguson-cops-were-caught-in-a-bloody-lie.html

Now, in this case the police had something to go on, which was a name. It didn't make national news because nobody got shot in the street. But if police came looking for the chunch, and I swore the chunch wasn't what they were looking for, would I get my head split open, or would I suffer interrogation closer to this?

http://netnebraska.org/interactive-multimedia/news/net-news-csi-trial-matt-livers-interrogation-part-2

For the layman, Matt Livers didn't kill anybody, but police got him to say he did over one crime scene investigator falsifying evidence over a hunch.

It's still racist and wrong what these kids did. But there has been a response within this thread that leads towards less understanding and more retribution.

You are right. We need more understanding and less retribution. At the same time...it was unacceptable how that guy in the red shirt acted. I think he was itching for trouble. He (and his buddies) need to be caught and held accountable.

I'm not just hard on those guys. I mean, to be fair, in recent months and years I've been critical of many cops who have been unacceptable in their treatment of black citizens, and I've been one to rally for Trayvon Martin when discussing his incident. In fact, I kind of hate George Zimmerman (and I -try- not to hate anyone) and I think that scumbag should be locked up before he kills another person. Just putting that out there, for anyone in this thread, not just you and runec.

This earns a knowing wink.

We don't need some kind of bat man to solve these problems, we need to take them as they come for what they are.

I think most people who have responded with more than two sentences are taking this for what it is.

I've seen the video a few times now, and I will triple down. The victim knows how to cover up, and those are some of the laziest punches I've ever seen. These kids were hassling the guy, not beating him to a pulp.

I'm not discounting that the guy got hit hard a few times, but he got scared worse than he got beat, which is the really troubling part. This guy has to ride the train like everybody else, now he has to be the guy who got attacked on the train he has to ride.

But he did it right, he kept his hands up and his head down, it could have been much worse for him with three guys. Don't think these kids would have attacked a large white man.

Yeah, also, when I first entered the thread, with my first response...I didn't know he was drunk. Thinking about it more now...maybe the fact he was drunk was a big factor in the whole thing.

I was pretty upset with this story at first. I just found the guy in the red shirt to be adding to the tensions over the Michael Brown incident. Like he wanted to pile them on. Now...with the fact that he was drunk...maybe it was kind of a drunken blunder that just inadvertently exploded into more controversy.

At first, not knowing he was drunk, I thought it was much more about malice. After thinking more about what you and runec said...maybe it is, more than anything else, just about stupid shitheads who are delinquents.

The media might have blown it up into something it isn't...sadly, that is the media as usual. They do it every single day now. It's not even funny how bad they are about it. They do the same thing when it is a story about...well, it happened with the Michael Brown incident. First word most people caught was that "it was an unarmed teen shot dead in the streets". Then we find out that Michael Brown stole from a convenience store and was a bit rough with the store clerk before an officer found him. It happened with the Trayvon Martin incident, too. "Zimmerman shot dead an unarmed teen". Then we later find out that George was in a scuffle and had some injury to the back of his head (although, I still blame Zimmerman for the incident, I think he was in the wrong, won't go into the Trayvon Martin incident in this thread, but I'm not sided with Zimmerman and I think it is a shame he went free and is still out there, still collecting mugshots no less).

The racist comments within this thread smh...

But I agree, this was ridiculous. Violence hasn't solved anything in this whole movement thus far. And you shouldn't approach someone who is white and ask them on their opinion. White people should stay in their lanes, yes, but don't attack them for doing so. This dude was minding his own business.

This thread ruins my hope in humanity almost as badly as the video does.

Are we seriously talking about how "weak' the guy getting beat up is and how "easy' he was getting hit? I'm sure I wouldn't have fared any better and would have probably loved for somebody to stop the attack. I wouldn't have let a stranger borrow my cell phone either.

Seriously, it's really sad imo that none of those people lifted a finger to stop this or even said anything. I'm as weak as they come and terrified of interaction with people but there is no way I could stand there and watch that happen, I would have at least tried to reason with them, and that has nothing to do with me being a man. (Seeing as how most women could easily handle me in a "fight".)

Instead these people would rather video tape it and let it continue.

Fucking pathetic.

Nice to know that a random gang of thugs can hop on a bus and beat the hell out of an innocent man and only face misdemeanor charges and not a single person will lift a finger to stop it.

The human race has fallen so far...

You had me until you said thugs, isn't there a better definition for these kids?

I would venture to say the question was an excuse, not a reason. Racism may have played a part in who they targeted ( but so could the victim's age and appearance ( ie a glasses wearing kinda nerdy guy they could pick on ) ) on the train to begin with. But I'd be willing to bet they were going to start shit on that train regardless of who was on it. They picked the one person least likely to fight back and risk harm or capture themselves.

They were looking for someone "weak" to bully and once the morons get rounded up I'll bet its not the first time on record.

I'm sure there is a "better" definition somewhere, but I'm not going to apologize for calling them thugs. They are thugs. I'll call somebody whatever I want if they're the kind of person who hops onto a bus and kicks the crap out of a random innocent person. There is no excuse.

I don't care what the motivation was, I don't care if it was racially motivated, I don't care if they were bored, I don't care if they were drunk, and I don't care if they just wanted some skittles.

I am not going to defend a group of people who attack a person for no reason. What exactly should I call people like that besides thugs?
