To what extent do you believe in the Oedipus/Electra Complex?

If you don't know what they are it's

Oedipus Complex : in psychoanalytic theory, a desire for sexual involvement with the parent of the opposite sex and a concomitant sense of rivalry with the parent of the same sex; a crucial stage in the normal developmental process.
TL:DR Boy's have a sexual desire for their mother at a young age UNCONSCIOUSLY.

Electra Complex : Same thing as the Oedipus Complex but the Daughters have a UNCONSCIOUS desire for their father.

I believe in it, but Freud's psychology is mostly a crock of nonsense.

Well, Adolph Hitler had somewhat of an Oedipus Complex, didn't he? Or at least never made it past the Oedipus stage in Freud's five stages, I think it was...

So, I guess I believe it can happen, it's similar to having sexual desire for siblings/cousins, correct?

About Freud, he was pretty much the founder of psychology though, so it would make sense if the "psychology" from his time was more nonsense.

Here we go again, I swear people say they don't like incest but the sure like to talk about it.

I need more information on this before making a opinion.

I believe anything is possible, people have desires for things they don't even know they do or want.

I know you are making a psychological question of the brain but wait and watch has some idiots make into is incest right or wrong even thou that was't the question in the firs place.

Freud never wrote about any girls, considered homosexuality a human abnormality, and pretty much based all of his sexual psychology around how some end up "abnormal", aka homosexual, and how some become "normal", aka heterosexual. I feel like even for the era he was way ahead of his time in being a total ignorant bigot, but he has impacted psychology a lot, even if I and a lot of others wish he wasn't.

Even if he was an "ignorant bigot", he was the founder of psychoanalysis, so much of the studies in that field today are based off his works (please correct me if I am wrong about that though, I only learned some about him in AP Euro, and then did some quick google searches to respond to this thread XD). Though, what do you wish he hadn't done?

Also, question about Oedipus complex: Wasn't there some Greek thing about a guy named Oedipus? And that's where the name came from?

Yup, the complex stemmed from the Greek story of Oedipus

Yep Oedipus killed his father and married his mother, hence the name.

And I'd say most modern psychologists think of Freud as influential but overall a joke, but still do base at least something from him.

Ah, okay, sorry then. I guess I thought he was taken a little more seriously XD

But Oedipus did this by accident, he was removed from both parents over a prophecy that he would kill his father and marry his mother, which is what makes the story so tragic. There was foreshadowing, the odds were it couldn't happen, and it did anyway.

Don't really have an opinion on whether the complex exists or not, but at least the Greeks knew this could only literally happen by some tragic mistake.
