This manga has gotten so much better than when it first debuted. Admittedly, going straight to the Kiten arc right after everyone was starting to settle down after the underwater temple arc seemed a little fast paced for my liking, but it's good to know that Yuki is keeping this series moving along at a steady pace..Plus, William Vangeance hype. It's also great that the asspulls are next to none *cough* Fairy Tail *cough*. Overall, I'm glad Black Clover is doing exceptionally well in the rankings, and I can only hope the sales are doing good too. An OVA has already been announced, let's hope an anime series gets done next!

Okay, so without spoiling anything, I just want to know this: do the side characters in this manga get treated well or is it like the dragonball franchise after the cell saga, where the side characters just get their asses kicked until the main character shows up and beats the bad guy?

I'm only following the viz media release right now, and what seems to go on is some side character or characters will be losing a fight and then Asta shows up and they find a way to win together with a strategy that relies on everyone's unique powers. While it's formulaic, I think it's a welcome variation to the typical shounen formula I mentioned above. However I still find the fights always end up feeling very Asta-centric, with the side characters getting only very brief moments to shine. I kinda like the supporting cast in this manga and I want to see them do well, so I just thought I should ask whether later in the story they get to really kick some ass or if it's just Asta time all day.

First, my memory is bad so I don't remember details much.

With that out of the way....I'm at chapter 75 and will say that it is still following what you said with " some side character or characters will be losing a fight and then Asta shows up and they find a way to win together with a strategy that relies on everyone's unique powers". He is the main force behind winning but couldn't be done without the others. On top of that there are a few characters who have shown they don't really need his help at all too. So while the focus is on him, or his rival, the side characters seem to do pretty well.

Finally got enough free time to finish volume 3 of this series. I have to say I'm definitely looking forward to the next release. This series has been awesome so far even in spite of how derivative it is. I especially love the art, with its surprisingly detailed backgrounds and locations and its pure kinetic feeling. I'm especially fond of the use of the inking, which is unlike any other manga I've ever read. If there is any single element of this series that pulls it above the countless other derivative shonen jump battle manga it would easily be the artwork. I also like that the characters' power can escalate and won't just stay fixed in place (like I feared it would be from the first two volumes) Asta and Yuno's fight against Mars was great for setting a precedent for what the fights in this series will be like and I hope that future bouts will follow in the same style (hopefully with less side characters being frozen and useless though) I think it's also cool that the new villain we get to see near the end of the volume is set up to be like a dark parallel to Asta, another person ostracized from society because of the nature of his magic. Sadly we really don't get much character out of him in this volume but the next one will have plenty of time to flesh him out. Volume 3 has made me go from casually enjoying the series to being firmly invested in it, and I only hope the upward curve of quality keeps going into the next volumes.

You will absolutely love the Underwater Temple arc. It's my favorite of the series so far. Really, even after Tabata's failed Hungry Joker, I feel like this is a great comeback. Like you said, it's a bit derivative of similar mangas that we all know & love, but it does a good job at it in my opinion. I personally feel like the story is fairly interesting so far.

Ha! Not on the same scale, but the concept is still the same. I really do feel like towards the end of volume 3, Black Clover starts finding its own purpose and it truly excels at that. Black Clover doesn't need petty friendship speeches to show how battles are done, nor does it really use Deus Ex Machina's constantly like Fairy Tail is guilty of. Which is why that's a plus in my book; the use of tactics & strategies is where this manga shines imo. Not to mention, I love a lot of the characters. Glad to know you gave this series a chance and are enjoying it at that, it really does get good from volume 4+. The anime will most certainly put the manga sales of 2017 up there in the top 30, possibly even top 10.

Yeah I'm hoping the anime is a strong hit, especially seeing as the only three shonen battle anime on tv right now are One Piece (phenomenal manga, horrible anime) Twin Star Exorcists (Has some merit but ultimately falls short) and Dragonball Super (don't even get me fucking started). I'm really glad to hear that volume 4 represents a stride for the series to hit, there are definitely elements of a series that's on par with the big 3 in Black Clover, and I really want to see it be that, but up until now it's felt a bit too restrained. I might be setting myself up for disappointment via unrealistic expectations, but I truly hope it reaches the heights of the fighting anime and manga that got me and so many others into the medium to begin with.

Lol, Dragon Ball Super...I dropped that a long time ago. I'll be honest w/ you, Black Clover isn't anything ground breaking, I'd be lying if I went that far. However, I do feel it achieves at what it's trying to be and it's been good so far. If you have extremely high expectations, you may be disappointed, but I'm not really sure what your standards are. It's a simple Shonen battle manga that leaves a little bit of mystery, has awesome artwork, great characters (my favorite has to be between Yami Sukehiro & William Vangeance due to the mystery that surrounds his character), tells an interesting story that's easy to follow, and has well thought out battles that don't leave you disappointed. At least, not w/ me anyway. Seriously, if the Underwater Temple arc disappoints you, you're out of your mind.

She does get some good development as a character, so I'd say sure

I think he gets about 3 girls that fall for him? Although Noelle is really the only one who's gotten relevant screen time as far as romance goes. There's absolutely no way Mimosa or Rebecca will ever be shipped w/ Asta. It's obviously going to be Noelle & Asta at the very end
