I love anime but sometimes I get kind of disheartened trying to find something new and interesting to watch. Part of the reason for this is I get turned off by some shows who use a lot of tropes or cliches. Not everyone will agree on what constitutes a trope but I was wondering if maybe you guys had some ideas on shows that veer off the beaten path a bit.

For instance: It seems like a LOT of anime is about average middle/high school kids. I would kill for more stories about ADULTS.

Protagonists usually have either a special power (magic, tech, or otherwise) or access to someone else who does. I find myself more interested in unpowered people though. They don't have the crutch of being characterized by their power and so have a bit more depth to them (hopefully).

More complex female characters would be nice. I kinda cringe every time I see a female character throwing themselves at the male lead for no discernable reason.

So if you guys have any shows that you'd like to recommend that sort of "break the mold" I'd love to hear about it.

Ps. Bonus points for anybody who recommends a show that stars an adult, female, non-superpowered character.

Mushishi and Death Parade are good series for adults. The best anime series ever with an adult, female non-superpowered character is Seirei no Moribito. Balsa is just really strong. There's magic-y stuff in all those series but it's more the setting than the characters' abilities.

I think someone else mentioned Space Brothers which is a great series set in the real life present day.

But when I saw the title I though you were referring to animes that are actively anti-trope. If that's something you're interested in then Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun is a comedy series that pokes fun at shoujo tropes with a lot of role-reversal.

From what I have watched so far I would say The Devil is a Part Timer is pretty unique.

Black Lagoon is a pretty awesome adult focused story. Only problem with it is that they never animated the last story arc...at least to my knowledge.

You need to look at ServantXService. Adults! Working! Public service office. On of the best just finished up on CR. Shirobako. An anime about the making of anime, with a smidge of comedy. Again Adults! Working! NO HIGH SCHOOLERS.

I think you mean anti-clichê? Since even anti-trope can be a trope.

Red Garden I've been recommending a lot lately. HS girls, yes, but it's... weird... I can't remember if they had any super powers beyond being the living dead essentially.

(TBH, it sounded at first like you were describing psychopass, but someone already said it).

Also, Shion no Ou.

Elementary school girl is the main character. (not high school. Still.. roll with it) She stops talking after her parents are brutally murdered. She has amazing skills at playing shogi, and somehow ends up playing and competing in a tournament in order to figure out who the killer is.
NO superpowers, NO convoluted crap around the game (like so many card game anime titles). it's all played pretty god damned straight. And it's got a hell of a twist at the end.

Biggest problem? finding it legally. XD

I've moved this to the Advice, Info, Recommendations forum.

Someone mentioned Psycho-Pass and I agree. The lead character is female, and while she does have a special attribute, I don't think she would count as "superpowered."

I'll also recommend Nana. Two lead characters who are women. Definitely not superpowered.

For something with high school characters but is serious and not so typical, Kids on the Slope

I really loved Barakamon (though you'll have to go to Funi to watch it). It's about a young adult calligrapher who moves to an island and while living in the countryside with the villagers, grows as an artist and, more importantly, as a person.

I've only seen the first couple episodes, so I can't recommend it, but Natsuyuki Rendezvous features adults and it looks like it's about loss and about life after that loss.

Other people already mentioned Mushishi, and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun, but I'd recommend those as well.

A few others that haven't been mentioned:

Maison Ikkoku: Classic rom-com (one of the most popular ever in Japan, but it never really took off here), about a college kid who falls for the young widow that runs his boarding house.

Valkyria Chronicles: About a group of militia (mostly young adults) fighting a war in a faux-WWII style Europe. (gets a little magical towards the end, but that's not the focus)

Arakawa Under the Bridge: About a college-aged conglomerate heir who goes to live with a group of strange homeless people after agreeing to help a girl there "find out about love".

Samurai Champloo: Girl (probably young adult?) in 1800s Japan recruits two elite samurai to help her track down someone.

Spice and Wolf: Ancient wolf spirit (who mostly inhabits the body of a young maiden) recruits 20-something peddler in faux-Medieval Europe to take her to her ancient homeland.

Trigun: Two (adult female) insurance agents in Space-Western setting team up with legendary outlaw gunman in order to try to minimize the damage that he deals--only to find out that he's nothing at all like they were expecting.

Golden Time: Love story about two broken college kids trying to figure out who they are: one who has severed all ties with his past, another who is trying to reinvent herself after having her heart broken.

Ah My Goddess: College kid wishes for a goddess to "stay by my side forever"; clearly magical at times, but that's mostly done for comedic effect. The heart of the show is about a love story between a seemingly-perfect woman (she has her flaws, but they are slow to reveal themselves) and a kind-but-immature young man.

Otome Youkai Zakuro: A group of soldiers is assigned to a special unit to facilitate soldier-youkai (animal spirit) relations, in fantastical version of 1800s Japan; focuses on relationship between the soldiers and the young female youkai that they are assigned to protect and assist.

Gargantia of the Verderous Plant: Young space pilot who has known nothing but war gets himself stranded on a peaceful, water-covered world; tries to adapt to a new life, with the help of a cheerful girl who lives on the flotilla that picks him up.

perhaps try these: Kemono no souja erin(CR has this)
Overview/review: http://www.anime-forums.com/showthread.php/140783-Kemono-no-Souja-Erin

Hanasakeru Seishounen(CR has this) The characters in this are rather colorful to say the least.
Overview/review: http://www.anime-forums.com/showthread.php/160507-Hanasakeru-Seishounen-review

Saiunkoku Monogatari(cast of characters is similar to Hanasakeru Seishounen, so if you liked either anime, you'll probally like the other as well, even though the genres are slightly different)

Pandora Hearts(CR has this as well) This is a weird beast to say the least, the MC does have access to someone with immense powers, but no, It's not the same thing as in other shows, just go and watch it., This anime is abstract to say the least.

Kingdom(The MC is pretty strong, but even so he can get seriously messed up. I don't want to give much away, but yea)
Overview/review: http://www.anime-forums.com/showthread.php/157090-Kingdom-(complete-series)

These should fit your needs fairly well.
