The manga ran in the Sunday edition of the Yomiuri Shimbun paper for 17 years and 10 months from 1994 until 2012. There are over 10 million copies of the first 17 compiled book volumes.

Dragon Ball Gets 1st New TV Anime in 18 Years in July

Dragon Ball Super set after Majin Buu saga with foe stronger than Buu, Freeza teased

Dragon Ball Super, a brand new television anime inspired by Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga, will premiere on Fuji TV and other channels in July on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. This will be the first new Dragon Ball television series since Dragon Ball GT, which aired from 1996 to 1997.

The story of the anime is set a few years after the defeat of Majin Buu, when the Earth has become peaceful once again. The voice of Goku, Gohan, and Goten, Masako Nozawa commented on the new anime, saying, “We've always used the word 'chō' (Super) with Dragon Ball in commercials, games and the like, but the fact that the series titled Dragon Ball Super is beginning is the best thing ever.”

Fuji TV producer Osamu Nozaki commented on the new series as well, saying, “As I read the plot [of the series] I've already received from Akira Toriyama, my dreams for this begin to expand. An enemy even stronger than Buu or Freeza may appear...”

Toriyama is credited as the original creator, as well as for "original story & character concepts." Toei Animation's Kimitoshi Chioka (Hakaba Kitarō, Kamisama Kazoku) is the series director, and Naoko Sagawa (Yomiko Advertising, Inc.) and Atsushi Kido (Toei Animation) join Nozaki as producers. Kido entered Toei just as the company was animating the Dragon Ball Z anime's Freeza arc.

A new film taking place after the Majin Buu Saga, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' (key visual seen right,) premiered in Japan earlier this month. The film will eventually screen in 74 countries worldwide. Funimation hosted the North American premiere of the film on April 11 in Los Angeles

Vitreous Flower & Destroy the World Film's Story, Character Profiles Unveiled ANN News

Film with character designs by HENNEKO's Kantoku premieres this year

The website describes the story:

A floating space without gravity where an infinite number of lights shine in different colors: The "Box of Wisdom." Inside of this box, there are multiple worlds, multiple timelines, and there used to be many different people. This is where Dual and Dorothy were fighting with enemies called "Viruses." Worlds infected by viruses must be erased. That is the duty, the job of these girls. However, one day, Dual and Dorothy feel the presence of a new Virus. Arriving at the scene, they see a girl being attacked by Viruses. After saving the girl, the duo wait for her to awaken so they can ask who she is, where she came from, and where she is going. Finally, when the girl opened her eyes, she gave her name, Rimo, and whispered only one sentence... "I must return to the flower patch..."

The brand-new anime film is based on D.Backup, the scenario and illustration project by the relatively new creative unit "Physics Point." D.Backup won the grand prize in Pony Canyon's first ever Anime-ka Taishō (Anime Adaptation Prize) in 2013. According to the prize's website, the premise is "'software' characters fight bugs that have spread inside the box of wisdom."

Masashi Ishihama (From the New World, Kamichu!) is directing the film at A-1 Pictures (Sword Art Online, The [email protected]), and Fumihiko Shimo (Air, Kanon, Clannad, Amagi Brilliant Park, Golden Time, Infinite Stratos) wrote the screenplay. Kantoku (The "Hentai" Prince and the Stony Cat., Magical Suite Prism Nana) created the original character designs.

Physics Point, which consists of the creative duo Otono Shimura and Suyuli Hiraume, won one million yen (about US$10,000) and the opportunity to have their D.Backup concept adapted into anime in Pony Canyon's contest.

The film will open this year. Ponycan USA has announced plans to release the film in North America.

Cross Ange Creative Producer Indicates Sales Were Strong Enough for More ANN News

Cross Ange creative producer Mitsuo Fukuda revealed during Wednesday's Cross Ange Golden Week fan meeting in Tokyo that the anime has sold enough for a possible second season. He said, "Well, it isn't like the series hasn't sold enough to warrant a second season."

He also mentioned that while he wants to do a continuation, Sunrise told him that the studio was too busy with "a certain anime franchise that has been running for many years." However, Fukuda and planning producer Naotake Furusato urged fans to make their voices heard to both Sunrise and King Records. Fukuda emphasized, however, that he would not announce a second season at a fan meeting, as these kind of announcements would be made in magazines.

The fifth Cross Ange fan meeting was held on Wednesday at Ikebukuro's Cine Libre theater to celebrate the release of the fifth Cross Ange Blu-ray and DVD volume (cover seen above). Presents were also given to fans via a lottery, with prizes including signed scripts for episodes 13, 14, and 15, as well as signed, original sketches of dragon form Vivian (seen left), her father, and Villkiss.

The Sunrise television anime premiered in Japan in October, Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired in Japan, and Sentai Filmworks licensed the series in North America.

UNDER THE DOG UPDATES

Interview: Under the Dog's Jiro Ishii and Koji Morimoto ANN NEWS

First, a little backstory. Under the Dog is a sci-fi action anime directed by Sword of the Stranger's Masahiro Ando that successfully managed to close Kickstarter funding last year. At the time, the project's producer was Hiroaki Yura, who we interviewed extensively on ANNCast; his motivation for using Kickstarter was, as articulated in the podcast, to be able to produce a show that hearkened back to the glory days of heady sci-fi action anime from the mid-1990s without the influence or requirements of a traditional production committee. This past January, Yura left the project suddenly, and producer Koji Morimoto stepped in. The new team granted us an extensive interview at this year's Sakuracon.

Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend Anime Gets Sequel ANN NEWS

1st season ran on Noitamina programming block in January

The staff and cast of the anime adaptation of Fumiaki Maruto's Saenai Heroine no Sodate-kata light novel series announced at an event for the series on Sunday that a production on a sequel to the first season has been green-lit. The staff later confirmed the announcement on the official website, although the announcement does not specify the format of the anime.

The original light novels with illustrations by Kurehito Misaki and the anime revolve around Tomoya Aki, an otaku who is working part-time to earn enough money to buy anime on Blu-Ray, who meets a beautiful girl on his way home during spring vacation. He eventually models the heroine of his own dojin game after her. However, he finds out a month later that the girl is in fact his classmate, and he doesn't know her name. He learns that the girl — named Megumi — actually is hardly noticed by others. Tomoya also has no artistic ability or writing skills, so he asks ace of the art club Eriri Spencer Sawamura to provide the art, as well as the honor student Utaha Kasumigaoka to write the scenario. Can they produce a decent game for Comic Market?

The first season of the anime premiered in January in Japan on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block. Aniplex of America licensed the series, and streamed it on Aniplex Channel, Crunchyroll, and Hulu as it aired. A PS Vita game based off of the anime shipped in Japan last week.

Kare Baka Gag Manga Gets Anime Adaptation Green-Lit ANN NEWS

Manga by Bamboo Blade B creators centers on idiotic but handsome boyfriend

The first chapter of Masahiro Totsuka and Saki Adumi's Kare Baka ~Wagahai no Kare wa Baka de R~ (Idiot Boyfriend ~My Boyfriend is an Idiot) manga revealed on Friday that an anime project has been green-lit.

The love comedy gag manga centers around a girl named Akomi and her boyfriend Ponta Ninomiya. Ninomiya is a massive idiot who has no redeeming qualities aside from being really handsome. The manga follows the couple's everyday lives.

Adumi and Totsuka previously serialized the manga under the title Wagahai no Kare wa Baka de Aru (My Boyfriend is an Idiot) in Hakusensha's irregularly published Young Animal Island magazine starting in October 2013. Hakusensha simultaneously published the manga in the web magazine Young Animal Densi. Hakusensha released the second compiled volume in July 2014.

Totsuka wrote the original Bamboo Blade manga with Aguri Igarashi, and both Totsuka and Adumi worked together on the 12-volume Bamboo Blade B spinoff manga, although Adumi was then credited as part of the group Studio Neko. The two ended Bamboo Blade B in 2013. The original Bamboo Blade manga inspired a television anime series in 2007-2008.

DeNA's Hacka Doll News App Inspires TV Anime ANN NEWS

Series of shorts to air during Tokyo MX/BS 11's "Ultra Super Anime Time" block starting in October/ FALL

DeNA revealed during a stage event at the "Machi Asobi 14" event in Tokushima on Sunday that its Hacka Doll news app is inspiring a television anime series. Hacka Doll the Animation, which will be a series of anime shorts, will air on the Tokyo MX TV and BS 11 television channels' "Ultra Super Anime Time" programming block starting in October.

The upcoming 30-minute anime programming block "Ultra Super Anime Time" will air three anime shorts for the summer season and three shorts for the fall season. The summer shows include the second season of Miss Monochrome, the Wooser no Sono Higurashi Mugen-hen anime, and the Wakaba Girl anime. The fall shows so far include Tomoya Takashima (Yamishibai: Japanese Ghost Stories) and studio Tomovies' Kagewani anime and an unnamed new project from Hiroyuki Imaishi (Kill la Kill) and Studio Trigger.

Studio Trigger (Kill la Kill, Ninja Slayer From Animation) previously animated a two minute promo video for the app last year.

The anime personifies the app's customization engine as three "Hacka Dolls" — the personal entertainment AI and main navigator Hacka Doll #1 (played by Miyu Takagi), the anime expect Hacka Doll #2 (Kaya Okuno), and the knowledgeable otaku Hacka Doll #3 (Nanami Yamashita). The Hacka Doll's three voice actresses also sing the anime's theme song "First Heart Beat," while Reimi Yukarino voices the user. Ikuo Geso (Kill la Kill key animator) served as the director, storyboarder, animation director, editor, designer, and digital painter for the anime.

The Hacka Doll app delivers a customized feed of news for each user. The user answers some simple questions when launching the app for the first time, and then the app will filter the news that caters to the user's personal interests — boys love (BL), cosplay, anime, manga, games, light novels, voice cast members, and more. With daily use, the app automatically analyzes and learns which news articles the user reads and recommends to further personalize the feed.

The app delivers 25 news articles three times a day (morning, noon, and night). Articles about products have direct links to order each item from Tsutaya Online Shopping.

The news app is available on Apple's App Store for iOS devices and on Google Play for Android devices.

DeNA also released a web version of the app on Sunday. The company will also have a display booth for the franchise at the Comic Market 88 (Comiket) event in August.

Update: The news website CNet Japan is reporting that Geso will return to direct the TV anime series. Creators in Pack will be the main animation studio, and Studio Trigger will collaborate on the animation. Each episode will be 10 minutes long. CNet also reported that the title of the series will be Hacka Doll the Animation.
