I am very anti-whatever you call that style of dress attire.

It's the new "Kill yourself" look, it is getting very popular among obnoxious weeaboos.

I've read my fair share of volumes for Spice & Wolf, and I figured I would finally watch the anime and see how good it is. Holy balls, its fucking terrible. The whole anime rewrote Spice & Wolf story almost, omitted great events that happened, and rewrote and in some cases, gave a character a sex change and a role of which they never had in the light novel. They essentially jam packed a whole bunch of drama in the anime that was nowhere to be found in the light novels.

For instance, Lawrence was never trembling in fear when Holo transforms herself. Rather the emotions he feels are that of surprise and bewilderment. In the anime, he curls up into a ball and shakes in fear, which does not happen. For drama! Chloe never existed in the light novels. The character she replaced was Yarei who Lawrence barely even spoke to, and thanks to Yarei turning into Chloe, one of the best dialogue exchanges that happen in volume 1 was omitted. (Right after Holo transforms for the first time.)

5/10 such a shitty adaption so far that does no justice to the light novels and is not faithful. I have come to the realization that animes adapted from light novels will always be shit. There is only 1 exception so far, and that is A Certain Scientific Index.

I've read the first half-dozen LNs in this series; I agree with you that the changes they made to the plot that you point out were largely unnecessary, and generally a step in the wrong direction.

I do think you overstate your case, however; personally, I felt that the basic relationship between Holo and Lawrence was translated well, as was the witty repartee that the two of them have--and that's fundamentally what I want from Spice and Wolf. So, in that sense, I loved the LNs whereas I "only" liked the anime.

But I'm still glad that they made the anime--even though I prefer the LNs--because it introduced the LNs to a wider audience. Without the anime's success, I never would have heard of or picked up the LNs--and I seriously doubt that they would have gotten an English translation. I feel much the same way about SAO, and the success of the Toradora anime is the main reason I still hold out hope that those will get an official English release as well. And it goes for English books as well; my best friend only read Game of Thrones because of the HBO show (despite my previous encouragement that the books were great), and so now I can talk to her about the books.

From that perspective, I'm always glad to see franchises I like get adaptations; because it introduces great works to a larger audience--not to mention the fact that it puts money in the pocket of authors I like. Do I wish that many of the adaptations were better? Absolutely. But even a mediocre adaptation is often better than none.

What wold be the point of watching/reading the other, if the story was exactly the same as whichever you did first?
Thats why the call it an adaptation not a republication.

If fans actually thought like that, you wouldn't see people cry about every little change from the original source to the adaptation.

Hi,

First of all, I want to thank you all for your candid exchange of ideas. Even though it does get a little heated, its nice to see how much you seem to enjoy animes/light novels in general.

I would like to know if the light novels are thematically different than the anime or if the differences between the light novel and the anime are based solely on particular character nuances and scene exchanges.

I hope you guys don't use this inquiry to gut each other. I don't want to add fire to the flaming, simply think you've shown particular passion for the topic.

Thank you.

My, what white teeth you have. Its not thematically different, its that some things were changed and omitted. For the most part though, the key details that happen in the light novel were translated correctly to the anime. I just get my panties in a twist easily when it comes to proper adaptions.
