Finally... Ikuhara comes forward in a full indepth interview explaining ALL the symbolism. From Sailor Moon R to Yuri Kuma Arashi
Reading this stunned me. So many things I never expected to hear from him. The actual meaning of Chu Chu's existence for example was amazing. I never would have figured that he symbolized so many concepts, but looking back, it actually makes sense.
Also, we were interpreting Akio's car scenes TOTALLY wrong. Nobody actually has it right. And you'll slap yourself when you figure it out.

Oh yeah, that sure said a LOT - what a reveal!

Anyway... I love the original Sailor Moon anime (especially seasons 3 and 5 - S and Stars), and Revolutionary Girl Utena is one of my all time favorite animes as well. Both so classic!

I always personally interpreted RGU as a story about growing up and loss of innocence - letting go of childhood, loss of innocence and joining the adult world. The movie (Adolescence of Utena) to me however, was about finding your sexuality, your orientation and your significant other.

Great shows, the lot of them!

I've always saw all the characters as sexually ambiguous. Utena and Anthy are both bi. And the only male character that's not shown in a homoerotic way was miki, who happens to be the only male character, besides chu chu and that kid, who isn't an asshole.

The show is very overtly feminist, which... I don't have to nessasarilly agree with every message it's presenting. However, the execution, most of the time, is done very well and weaven throughout the story in a subtle way.

Which is why yuri kuma arashi kind of disapoints me. Most of what's said in Utena is repeated in Yuri Kuma, it's just that Yuri Kuma is more about sexuality, while Utena is more about gender.
And Utena felt sort of preachy a few times, but the story was so epic it could be forgiven
While Yuri Kuma just felt like they were throwing the message in my face, and it makes me think, "Okay.. I get it. It's okay to be a lesbian"
