Sadly you didn't highlight your chemistry reference, so this can't be accepted as an entry for the contest, please feel free to continue writing on it tho! ~Duster

“Come back!!!” I heard her call me. I kept running. How could she lie to me like this? I trusted her and she lied! I continued to run seeing nothing but blurs. All I felt was the cold air beating upon my face and making my tears sting even more. I rounded the corner when I heard a car behind me. I ran into a secret passage and was gone. Hidden from sight. Afraid to be seen when I saw it was my step father in the car. He was looking for me with a his brows set in a tight line and lips in an even tighter line. I was afraid.
I couldn’t go to Bethany’s that was the first place they would look. Hayliegh’s would be next. Who could I go to without them knowing? I know Lindsey’s. Her mother was nice and they even moved close by. I would have to take all back roads. Alleys were dark and of course they would look for me there so I used less used roads and made my way to Lindsey’s.
I knocked on her door and waited for someone to answer. When I was walking I was praying please let her be home. A light flicked on over my head and the curtain in the window was pulled back revealing her mother’s soft and angelic face.
Her mother was so stunning. She had wonderful soft blonde curls that cascaded down her face and deep blue eyes that reminded me of a lake. She opened the door and ushered me in while asking, “What’s wrong dear? Why are you here at this time of night?” My cheeks were still tear stained. She took a close look and lead me to the living room. “Please have a seat.” I sat as she said it. “So why are you here? Lindsey’s at her father’s.”
“My mom and her new husband are beating on me again. They were drunk and smoking stuff. Please don’t take me back.” I pleaded grabbing her shirt and crying into her shoulder. She rubbed me back and rocked me back and forth. “Now, now,” she said, “You don’t have to go back ever.” She reached and picked up the phone. “No!!!” I shouted as I tried to grab the phone from her hand. “Honey we have to report this, or else they won’t stop and they will drag you home.”
A fresh wave of tears started. I asked her to turn on the alarm before she called. She nodded and turned it on. “Why don’t you go and rest in Lindsey’s room?” I nodded and headed up the stairs and down the hallway. The last door to the left was her room. I opened and went in and laid down on her bed.
I couldn’t sleep so I looked around her room. The walls were painted blue her favorite color. She had pictures of her and her twin brother Mark together when they were younger. They were on a beach when they were five. That was a big difference from her now. She was so much more matured. Her hair was now a deep sandy blonde and she had her father’s eyes. They were green. She was nothing like Mark. Mark had his mother’s hair. A pure blond. His hair also was always brushed back into a window shaped peak.
Anyway Lindsey was now fourteen and so was I. She came back after leaving for five years. When she came back we became best friends again. She always helped me and I her.
Her bed was a cute bed with a canopy with flowers on it. She had a picture of her family when they were altogether. Her oldest sister was now at college. Her brother and her lived with their mother but only she visited her father. Mark should be here somewhere. I got up and put my back to her bead and started to rock.
There was a soft knock on the door. I went to it and I was shaking as I reached for the door handle. Afraid, did she call my mother. I opened the door and there stood Mark. Mark saw me shaking and reached out to me. He put his arm around my shoulder. He was used to this. Ever since we were young. When I was eight I started to run over to their house but usually returned home by myself. I didn’t want my mother to find out where I was.
Whenever I came over I had bad bruises, cuts, and scraps. They would help me and take care of me. I would always thank them and hurry home to avoid another beating. I was terrified when father left me to mother and she got remarried and he changed her. She used to be loving and caring but not now. She screamed and yelled and would beat me.
I looked at Mark. He smiled and said, “Mom won’t let them get away with this.” I just stared at him with tears in my eyes. How could he be so nice to me? I turned my head to look at her pictures and found one of me before all the beatings began. I had shoulder length brown hair with hazel eyes. But since then my hair grew out to my waist and my eyes were always foggy and never clear. I heard a knock on the door and pulled away from Mark.
I went out the room and went by the railing of the stairs and heard Mark creep up next to me. At the front door there stood a police officer and Mark and Lindsey’s mother. “Sid come down please.” she shouted up the stairs. I stood and slowly walked down the stairs. The steps creaked as I took each step.
I stopped next to her staring at my feet. “Sid this is Mr. Walker he’s going to take a look at you and see if you need to go to the hospital. Take your coat off and pull your sleeves up.” I nodded and pulled my coat off and pulled up my sleeves. She ushered us into the kitchen and had me sit down. She helped the officer examine my bruises and cuts. She got up after he wrote everything down and started to make coffee. He gladly took a cup when she offered it and asked me when this started happening and where I lived. I totally freaked. “Please don’t take me back!” The officer shook his head. “You aren’t ever going back. From what I’ve seen and heard you aren’t ever going back never.” I tried to smile at the thought and found that I couldn’t. “Should she go to the hospital?” she asked him. He nodded, “ I’ll take her. Would you like to come?”
“If I could, please.”
“What about Mark?” I asked
“He can come too. Mark!” she shouted, “I know your listening come on!”
“Coming mom!” he came around the corner and flashed me a smile. He already had his coat on. I sighed as he put his arm around my shoulders. I watched the officer and his mother grab their coats. Mark lead me to the front door. I snugged closer once he opened the door and the cold air hit me. I always liked him and I hoped he did too. He held me close. The officer said I could ride with them. As he pulled out a new set of headlights flashed out. I stopped and turned still in Mark’s arms. I started to cry. My mom jumped out of the car followed by my step father.
The cop stopped the car and saw them charge toward me. “You little bitch!” my mother shouted as she saw me in Mark’s arm. “I should have know you were sneaking around with a boy.” I pushed away from Mark. She went to punch me but Mark’s mother grabbed her hand. “I don’t think that is a good idea.”
“Shut up! When I want your opinion I will ask for it till then back away!” she pulled her hand back and punched Mark’s mom. Mark ran to her and grabbed her before she hit the ground. She held her hand to her nose and a small streak of blood ran down her face. My mom turned back to me and she pulled a gun out. “I hate you! You made my life miserable and shall die!” she pointed her gun at me. I heard the police officer’s car door slam shut and heard him run towards us. But he was too far away to reach us in time he was all the way to the other side of the block. “Don’t do it!” Mark cried out. He was holding his mother no more. She was sitting on the lawn. “Fine you can die first.” she pulled the trigger. The gun made the loud sound making everyone know she shot the gun. “Mark!” his mother cried out. I threw myself in front of him. The smoke cleared to me blocking Mark with a bullet wound in my chest. I fell to the sidewalk and everything went black. I heard my name and heard something hit the ground. I guessed the officer finally got there after calling for back up. I heard my mother cursing. I felt someone shake me. “Sid! Sid! Hang in there!” I heard an ambulance approach and then nothing. Everything was gone and everything was quiet. I felt nothing and didn’t care.
I felt a pain in my chest and started to cry out in pain. My eyes opened to see men in white coats and women in scrubs. I saw their mouths moving but heard nothing. Some had papers and other stuff. Some were talking but what were they saying. I felt another surge of pain and then my eyes closed involuntary.
